摘要: A spatial light modulator comprises: a first substrate (25); a second substrate (26); a layer of electrooptic material disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. A first electrode arrangement (27) is disposed over the first substrate (25); and a second electrode arrangement (35) is disposed over the second substrate (26). The first electrode arrangement (27) comprises first and second electrode layers (28,29) disposed over the first substrate, with the spacing between the first electrode layer (28) and the first substrate (25) being different to the spacing between the second electrode (29) layer and the first substrate (25). The first electrode layer (28) and the second electrode arrangement (35) are configured so as to co-operate, in use, to define a plurality of first addressable regions in the electrooptic material. The second electrode (29) layer and the second electrode arrangement (35) are configured so as to co-operate, in use, to define a plurality of second addressable regions in the electrooptic material.

摘要: An optical device comprises an input polarizer 4, a patterned retarder 5 and an output polarizer 12. The retarder 5 has regions 8 and 9, at least one of which alters the polarization of light from the input polarizer 4. The output polarizer 7 has a transmission axis 12 such that light passing through the regions 8 and 9 of the retarder 5 and through the output polarizer 7 is matched in amplitude, phase and polarization. Such a device may be used as a switchable parallax barrier with an LCD 2 to provide a display which is switchable between an autostereoscopic 3D mode and a 2D mode with the 2D mode having more uniform intensity across the display.

摘要: An autostereoscopic display comprises a pixellated transflective spatial light modulator which is arranged to provide a visual indication to an observer of the amount of crosstalk caused by reflection of ambient illumination. The display comprises a rear parallax barrier between a backlight and the modulator. Part of the barrier is formed as a screen blocking transmitted light from a first region of the modulator so that the pixels in this region are visible only by reflection of ambient illumination. In a second region, the pixels are illuminated with both transmitted and reflected light. A controller sets the pixels of the first region to maximum intensity and the pixels of the second region to a fraction of the maximum intensity. The fraction corresponds, for example, to a maximum amount of crosstalk which is permissible for autostereoscopic viewing. When the brightness of the first region is darker than or the same as the brightness of the second region, crosstalk is sufficiently low to permit autostereoscopic viewing.

摘要: A parallax barrier comprises evenly spaced groups of slits. Each group comprises two or more slits which are evenly spaced and the groups are spaced with a period which is greater than the product of the number of slits in each group and the slit period in each group. Such a barrier may be used with a spatial light modulator having columns of pixels whose structure cooperates with the barrier structure to provide a wider angle between views in a multiple view display, such as an autostereoscopic 3D display or a display providing two or more different views to two or more observers.

摘要: A lamp comprises a thin layer of phosphor (105,113) which is irradiated (46), for example by ultraviolet radiation, by a source which typically comprises a laser diode and a condenser (101,111). This causes the phosphor (105,113) to emit visible light with a Lambertion-type emission pattern. An optical system such as a reflector (102,115) concentrates the light from the phosphor (105,113). The phosphor (105,113) is thermally connected to a heatsink (103,116), of example by a plate (114) of sapphire glass, so as to dissipate the heat produced by the phosphor (105,113). The phosphor (105) may be mounted on a plane reflector (104) disposed on or comprising the heatsink (103) and facing a curved reflector (102) and the radiation source. Alternatively, the optical system may have an optical axis and the phosphor (113) may be substantially flat and inclined with the respect to the optical axis.

摘要: A backlight is provided for a transmissive spatial light modulator such as a liquid crystal device (1). The backlight comprises a light source (5), which supplies light through an input edge surface (12) of a non-flat light guide (4) having a front surface (4a) and a rear surface (4b). The rear surface (4b) comprises a plurality of concave features (10), each of which has a surface (11) which faces the input surface (12) and which is oriented so as to direct light towards and out of the front surface (4a). The surfaces (11) have slope angles with respect to a tangent plane to the rear surface (4b) at the feature (10) which vary with distance from the input surface (12) so as to concentrate output light from the light guide (4) into a desired angular output range.

摘要: A parallax barrier comprises a plurality of parallel vertical apertures or apertures. In a direction transverse to the apertures, the apertures have an optical transmission function which comprises a plurality of sub-apertures so that the function varies in this direction. In general, the function is constant in a direction parallel to the apertures or apertures. Such a barrier may be used with a spatial light modulator such as a liquid crystal display to form an autostereoscopic 3D display.

摘要: A lighting system for an indoor room or space is designed to provide a diffuse, glare free source that illuminates the room from the cornice, or a similar location around the join between the walls and ceiling. This may be achieved via a direct source of illumination at the cornice location, or by projecting illumination from a remote source. The lighting system is further designed to allow for illumination of certain areas of the cornice, and hence the room, whilst leaving other parts dark. There are multiple advantages of an adaptable system such as this, but in particular the lighting conditions can be adjusted for optimum lighting levels, for example dimming selected areas when viewing a television.

摘要: An optical device is provided, for example for use as a brightness enhancing film in a display. The device comprises a sheet (31) carrying a plurality of light-concentrating elements in the form of prism-like structures (171). The sheet (31) is non-flat, for example by being bent or curved, in one direction. Each of the prism-like structures (171) has first and second surfaces (34, 35) extending from the sheet (31) and intersecting at a line (33). A line (32) parallel to the viewing direction and passing through the intersection line (33) bisects the opposite surface (36) where it intersects (38) the film (31). When used in a display, such a device provides improved and uniform display brightness across a display of curved or other non-flat shape.

摘要: An apparatus for acquiring an image comprises a display (60), such as an LCD and backlight, for illuminating the object. A photosensor array (61) detects light reflected from the object. A controller (62) causes the display (60) and the photosensor array (61) to: illuminate the object (100); acquire (102) a first image (104) of the object; display a first illuminating pattern (106) for illuminating the object, which first illuminating pattern is derived (108) from the first image; and acquire (102) a second image (110) of the object illuminated by the first illuminating pattern (106). The controller (62) preferably causes the display (60) and the photosensor array (61) to: display a second illuminating pattern (112) for illuminating the object, which second illuminating pattern is derived (108) from at least the second image; and acquire a third image (114) of the object illuminated by the second illuminating pattern (112).
