Abstract: This relates to systems and methods for determining one or more physiological signals of a user using ambient light. The systems and methods can include one or more light sensors configured to measure light that has interacted with a user and one or more light sensors configured to measure ambient light. The gain of the one or more light sensors can be adjusted based on the levels of measured ambient light. For example, the gain of the one or more light sensors can be increased when ambient light levels are low (e.g., a low light environment), or the gain of the one or more light sensors can be decreased when ambient light levels are high (e.g., a bright light environment). In some examples, the systems can include a variable opacity element whose transmission properties (e.g., opacity and/or selected one or more wavelengths to pass through) can be varied.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is an electronic device including an optical sensing unit for distinguishing between a user's body and an object. The optical sensing unit can include a plurality of light detectors, a plurality of first light emitters, and a plurality of second light emitters. The plurality of first light emitters can measure physiological information of the user, and the plurality of second light emitters can measure a state of the device. The device can include one or more optical components, which can allow the plurality of second light emitters to emit first light towards the strap attached to the device and second light towards the edges of the device.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to detecting hand gesture input using an electronic device, such as a wearable device strapped to a wrist. The device can have multiple photodiodes, each sensing light at a different position on a surface of the device that faces skin of a user. Examples of the disclosure detect hand gestures by recognizing patterns in sensor data that are characteristic of each hand gesture, as the tissue expands and contracts and anatomical features in the tissue move during the gesture.

Abstract: This relates to systems and methods for determining one or more of a user's physiological signals. The one or more of the user's physiological signals can be determined by measuring pulsatile blood volume changes. Motion artifacts included in the signals can be canceled or reduced by measuring non-pulsatile blood volume changes and adjusting the signal to account for the non-pulsatile blood information. Non-pulsatile blood volume changes can be measured using at least one set of light emitter-light sensor. The light emitter can be located in close proximity (e.g., less than or equal to 1 mm away) to the light sensor, thereby limiting light emitted by the light emitter to blood volume without interacting with one or more blood vessels and/or arterioles. In some examples, the systems can further include an accelerometer configured to measure the user's acceleration, and the acceleration signal can be additionally be used for compensating for motion artifacts.

Abstract: An electronic device may include one or more microphones that monitor ambient noise and generate ambient noise data. The electronic device may include processing circuitry that receives the ambient noise data and compares the ambient noise data to a baseline ambient noise profile to detect changes in the ambient noise. Changes in the ambient noise may be caused by user gestures. The electronic device may compare the changes in the ambient noise to characteristic changes in ambient noise that are associated with user gestures to determine the user gesture made by a user. The processing circuitry may modify the operation of the electronic device based on the user gesture. An ambient noise input device may include surface features or movable components that cause the characteristic changes in the ambient noise. Ambient noise input devices may provide feedback to guide a user to provide input using ambient noise sensing.
