Abstract:
Circuitry to remove switches from signal paths in integrated circuit programmable gain attenuators. Programmable gain attenuators and programmable gain amplifiers commonly switch between signal levels using semi-conductor switches. Such switches may introduce non-linearities in the signal. By isolating the switches from the signal path linearity of the PGA can be improved.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for improving the current matching within current mirror circuits in applications such as low voltage integrated circuits. Embodiments of the present invention attempt to maintain the proper current ratio between reference and output supplies by adjusting the reference output of the current mirror. An existing reference voltage on the output side of the mirror can be used or a reference voltage can be created to be used for the voltage regulation of the reference side of the current mirror.

An integrated receiver with channel selection and image rejection is substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit. A receiver front end provides programable attenuation and a programable gain low noise amplifier. LC filters integrated onto the substrate in conjunction with image reject mixers provide image frequency rejection. Filter tuning and inductor Q compensation over temperature are performed on chip. Active filters utilize multi track spiral inductors with shields to increase circuit Q. Frequency planning provides additional image rejection. Local oscillator signal generation methods on chip reduce distortion. A PLL generates needed out of band LO signals. Direct synthesis generates in band LO signals. PLL VCOs are centered automatically. A differential crystal oscillator provides a frequency reference. Differential signal transmission throughout the receiver is used. ESD protection is provided by a pad ring and ESD clamping structure. Shunts utilize a gate boosting at each pin to discharge ESD build up. An IF VGA utilizes distortion cancellation achieved with cross coupled differential pair amplifiers having their Vds dynamically modified in conjunction with current steering of the differential pairs sources.

Abstract:
A circuit and method for bridging an analog signal between two integrated circuits operating at different supply voltages. The circuit is a two stage fixed gain amplifier. The first stage is a transconductance amplifier and the second stage is an operational amplifier. The first stage converts an input signal from a voltage into a current. The second stage converts the current signal to an output voltage signal.

Abstract:
A VGA control circuit includes a differential control voltage generator having an input coupled to an external control voltage and having a pair of control voltage outputs, a transfer function compression region TFCR compensator coupled to the differential control voltage generator, and a TFCR detector coupled to the TFCR compensator and developing a compensator activation signal in response to the detection of a TFCR state in the transfer curve. A method for controlling a VGA circuit exhibiting transfer function logarithmic compression includes detecting when a VGA circuit is entering a logarithmic compression state, and applying an exponential compensation signal to the VGA circuit to cancel the compression state. A VGA system includes a VGA control system developing a plurality of differential control signals and a plurality of VGA stages coupled to the plurality of differential control signals. The control system includes a differential offset generator coupled to an internally generated control voltage, and a plurality of swing limiters developing the plurality of differential control signals. The voltage applied to the differential offset generator is generated by a PTAT and a tanh.sup.-1 generator which has its input tied to the external control voltage.
