Abstract:
A process for the preparation of a solid catalyst component for the homo or copolymerization of olefins, wherein the solid catalyst component is made from or contains Mg, Ti, halogen and an electron donor selected from cycloalkyl ethers, wherein the process includes the steps of (a) dissolving a Mg based compound and a TiCl3 based compound in a liquid medium further made from or containing a cycloalkyl ether and a compound of formula R2OH where R2 is a C1-C20 hydrocarbon group, in which the Ti/Mg molar ratio ranges from 0.1 to 0.5, the cycloalkyl ether/Mg ratio ranges from 1 to 4 and the ROH/Mg molar ratio ranges from 1 to 4; and (b) adding, to the solution coming from step (a), SiCl4 in an amount such that the R2OH/SiCl4 molar ratio ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 and maintaining the temperature in the range 50-150° C. thereby precipitating the solid catalyst component particles.

Ti and an electron donor such as mercaptoester derivatives of the general formula (I). in which Z is selected from C, Si, O, N, S or P, with the proviso that the atoms O, S, P and N are not directly linked to either the carboxylic group or the sulfur atom of formula (I), the R2 groups, equal to or different from each other, are selected from hydrogen or a C1-C20 hydrocarbon radicals, optionally containing a heteroatom selected from halogen, P, S, N, O and Si, which can be fused together to form one or more cycles, m is a number satisfying the valences of Z and n is an integer ranging from 1 to 10, X is O or S, Y is —OR3, —NR4R5) or R6 groups in which R1 and R3 are selected from C1-C15 hydrocarbon groups, optionally containing a heteroatom selected from halogen, P, S, N, O, and Si, R4-R5 groups, independently, are hydrogen or R1 groups, and R6 groups have the same composition as R1 groups.

A pre-polymerized catalyst component for the polymerization of olefins endowed with high activity and morphological stability comprises a non-stereospecific solid catalyst component containing Ti, Mg and a halogen, and an amount of an ethylene/alpha-olefin block (co)polymer ranging from 0.1 up to 5 g per g of said solid catalyst component, said prepolymerized catalyst component being characterized by a mercury porosity, due to pores having radius up to 1 μm, ranging from 0.15 to 0.5 cm3/g and by the fact that at least 55% of said porosity is due to pores having pore radius up to 0.2 μm.
