A method of selectively actuating and indicating a position in a well includes selecting at least one well tool from among multiple well tools for actuation by flowing direct current in one direction through a set of conductors in the well, the well tool being deselected for actuation when direct current flows through the set of conductors in an opposite direction; and detecting a varying resistance across the set of conductors as the selected well tool is actuated, the variation in resistance providing an indication of a position of a portion of the selected well tool.

    摘要: A method and apparatus is provided for collecting reservoir data. The method includes providing one or more electromagnetic sources for generating an electromagnetic field in a reservoir and providing one or more electromagnetic sensors equipped with capacitive electrodes. The electromagnetic source is located separately from the electromagnetic sensor. The electromagnetic sensor may either be located within a well or at the surface, is capable of measuring the electromagnetic field in three dimensions, and may be isolated from the well fluids. The data collected by the electromagnetic sensors can be used to create a model of the oil reservoir, including the water saturation.

Another well tool includes a packing element assembly including a packing element and a backup ring, the packing element being configured to bias the backup ring into contact with a surface opposite a circumferential portion of the backup ring, while another circumferential portion does not contact the surface. A method of setting a well tool includes providing a packing element assembly with multiple packing elements, and setting the well tool by squeezing fluid from between the packing elements via a gap, and then closing off the gap.

    摘要: Bypassing damaged lines in a well. A subterranean well system includes a circuit extending in the well to a well tool. A set of multiple redundant lines is provided at a location along the circuit. Each of the set of lines is capable of providing conductivity between portions of the circuit. A method of providing conductivity across a damaged portion of a circuit in a subterranean well includes the steps of: damaging at least one line of a set of redundant lines extending along a tubular string; and isolating the damaged at least one line from an undamaged portion of the circuit.
