Abstract:
An apparatus for slitting and opening elongate foam sheet material or the like to form an open, net-like, cushioning material. The apparatus includes slitting means comprising a pair of cylindrical rolls forming a nip therebetween through which the advancing sheet material passes. One of the rolls has a plurality of axially extending rows of spaced cutting blades on the surface thereof, the rows extending along a small helix angle with respect to the axis of the roll. The blades of adjacent rows are staggered, and a pair of drawing rolls are positioned immediately downstream of the slitting means to open the incisions and thereby insure that the advancing sheet will not be retained by the cutting blades.
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for dispensing web material, especially cellular padding such as is used in packaging furniture and the like, wherein the material is directed downwardly in suspended condition from a source past an elongate stationary knife. Upon a predetermined length of the material falling past the knife, an anvil roller is traversed automatically along the knife, with the web material interposed therebetween, so that the anvil roller presses the material against the knife, causing the same to sever a predetermined length from the web material.
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for forming corner pads utilizing a plurality of plies, each of which is adapted to be folded into a trihedral angle arrangement, wherein the plies are successively fed into juxtaposed relation while adhesive is applied to predetermined surfaces of certain of the plies, and the plies are successively formed into trihedral angle arrangements while being successively placed in contiguous, nesting relationship to secure the nested plies together by the adhesive to maintain the same in a collective trihedral angle arrangement.
Abstract:
Apparatus for producing resilient, readily stretchable tubes for receiving packaging articles therein, including means for curving or bowing a sheet or web of flexible foam material to bring opposing side edges thereof into substantially collinear relationship. Means is provided for uniting the thus positioned side edges to form a tube from the web, and slitting means is provided for slitting the foam material in a pattern of spaced apart rows of spaced incisions so arranged that the tube may be stretched radially to receive therein an article of greater cross-sectional area of the tube, and the but then will recover into substantial conformance to the size and shape of the article therein.
Abstract:
A slitting roll for slitting an advancing sheet of elongate flexible foam material or the like to form a pattern of incisions therein. The roll includes a plurality of ribs of inverted Vshaped profile in the surface thereof, the ribs being disposed along a small helix angle with respect to the axis of the roll. A series of spaced radial apertures are formed in the ribs to define a plurality of spaced cutting blades, and the roll comprises a series of coaxial roll sections fixedly assembled onto a common supporting shaft.
