A biocompatible fastener particularly well-suited for use in fundoplication procedures. In a preferred embodiment, the fastener is designed to break within the span of approximately three to six months after implantation and comprises a male portion and a female portion. The male portion includes a first base member, the first base member being generally flat and oval. A pair of male members are mounted on the bottom surface of the first base member, each male member comprising a cylindrical post extending downwardly from the bottom surface of the first base member and a conical head disposed at the bottom end of the post. The female portion includes a second base member, the second base member being generally flat and oval. A pair of sleeves are mounted on the top surface of the second base member and extend upwardly therefrom. Each sleeve defines a bore adapted to receive a head from a corresponding male member and has an inner flange formed thereon. The flange extends radially into the bore and is engageable with the head once the head has been inserted therepast so as to inhibit withdrawal of the head from the bore. Except for an outer coating on each of the two heads, the fastener is made entirely of a non-bioabsorbable material or a bioabsorbable material having a relatively slow degradation rate. By contrast, the outer coating is made of a bioabsorbable material having a relatively fast degradation rate. The thickness of the outer coating is appropriately selected so that degradation of the outer coating permits each head to be withdrawn past its flange after a desired period of time.

An embodiment of the invention includes a method of fastening together two tissue portions. The method may include positioning a medical device adjacent a region of tissue having two tissue portions. The medical device may include a male member and a female member having a first bioabsorbable material overlying one of a non-bioabsorbable material and a second bioabsorbable material. The first bioabsorbable material may have a first degradation rate, and the second bioabsorbable material may have a second degradation rate slower than the first degradation rate. The method may also include inserting the male member inside the female member so as to inhibit withdrawal of the male member from the female member with the two tissue portions between the male member and the female member.

A method of forming intra-aortic balloons includes forming a balloon blank having a sleeve section at its proximal end. To reduce the diameter of the sleeve section of the balloon, the sleeve section is stretched longitudinally by gripping a first portion of the balloon blank at the distal end of the sleeve section, gripping a second portion of the balloon blank at the opposite end of the sleeve section and moving at least one of the gripped portions away from the other so as to reduce the diameter of the sleeve section. A heating element is positioned within the sleeve section to relieve the stress in the sleeve after stretching, by heating the sleeve section. The sleeve section is then cooled in order to preserve the sleeve section in its reduced diameter state thereby forming an intra-aortic balloon having a balloon blank with a reduced diameter sleeve section.

An intra-aortic balloon pump catheter includes an inner lumen formed by a thin walled superelastic metal alloy tube, namely of nitinol, with an inside diameter sufficient for a guidewire and a small outside diameter which allows reduction of the outer lumen and related components by at least one size French while providing gas shuttle capacity between the lumens for conventional intra-aortic balloon pump operation. The outer lumen is a tube formed of co-extruded plastics to enhance the size reduction and capacity goals, with an inner nylon portion for strength and a relatively thin polyurethane outer portion for biocompatability, flexibility and compatibility for bonding to a thin polyurethane balloon. The proximal end sleeve of the balloon is stretched and then stress-relieved by heating with an internal heater on a mounting mandrel to effect a desired small diameter sizing. A radiopaque metal marker ring of nitinol also is provided to improve imaging capabilities while being compatible with the lumen materials.
