摘要: An electrode support mechanism and method for use in electric arc melting or smelting furnaces wherein a pair of horizontal, superimposed arms are each provided with clamping devices at their outer end for supporting and supplying electric power to a vertically disposed electrode depending into an arc furnace. The arms are each supported on a vertical support post; the upper arm is fixed to the post and the lower arm which normally carries the electrode is movable relative to the post to adjust the electrode to maintain a constant arc at the furnace. The movable arm is moved vertically by a jack screw carried by the upper arm and depending into contact with the lower arm. The clamping devices at the ends of the arms are spring-biased toward contact with the electrode, and a linking mechanism is provided to alternately release the arm clamping mechanisms from the electrode under the control of an actuating system utilizing fluid pressure actuated cylinders. The electrode is clamped to the lower clamping arm when the lower clamping arm is operating within its normal range of adjustment, but the electrode is released from the lower arm and clamped to the upper clamping arm whenever it is necessary to move the lower arm independently of the electrode to reposition the lower clamping arm within its normal range of adjustment. When the lower arm is so repositioned, the electrode is reclamped by the lower arm and released by the upper clamping arm.

摘要: An apparatus for changing bushings in a glass melting furnace is disclosed. A support attached to the furnace holds the bushings beneath an opening in the forehearth. A replacement bushing is placed in the framework, translated next to the operating bushing, brought to operating thermal condition and then both bushings are translated until the replacement bushing is beneath the opening in forehearth. This eliminates the need to freeze the molten glass within the bushing.

摘要: The feeding of batch material to a melting furnace is disclosed. The batch materials are choke fed to keep the total batch crust plus molten glass depth constant. The batch level keeps the arc electrodes submerged and helps promote arc stability and melting efficiency.

摘要: An apparatus for replenishing electrodes in an arc furnace or the like. The apparatus threadedly attaches a replenishment electrode section to a previously installed, presently working electrode section without interrupting the operation of the furnace. The electrode sections are provided with mating terminal threaded portions which are engaged by simultaneousy lowering and rotating the replenishment electrode section. By lowering the replenishment electrode at a faster rate than the lead of the electrode threads and accommodating relative vertical movement of the electrodes, it is not necessary to precisely match the lowering speed of the replenishment electrode with the threads of the electrode. A novel screw-driven, electrically insulated, telescopic drive train is employed for this purpose. The replenishment electrode is carried by a plurality of peripherally spaced wedges actuated independently of the drive train to retain and release the electrode. The telescopic drive train may incorporate either a universal joint in combination with a telescopic connection or reversely wound helical springs which both rotate the electrode and compress to permit the replenishment electrode section to move relatively upwardly during threading.

摘要: An apparatus for adjustably supporting a vertical electrode for an arc-type furnace. The apparatus includes an upper stationary electrode clamping structure and a lower adjustable electrode clamping structure suspended from the upper structure by adjustment screws. The two clamping structures are mounted on a carriage movable linearly into and out of registry with the furnace to accommodate maintenance and repair. Each clamping structure comprises an arcuate electrical contact and wedge-type slips engaging the periphery of the electrode in opposition to the electrical contact, the slips being spring-biased into electrode engagement and cam actuated from electrode engagement. The cams are actuated by a common shaft extending between the two clamping structures, so that the electrode is released from one clamping structure when engaged by the other clamping structure.

摘要: An apparatus for accurately aligning a replacement electrode with a working electrode. The replacement electrode is suspended from a trolley movable in two directions in a rectilinear pattern. The trolley is moved initially in a first direction into general transverse alignment with the working electrode position, then displaced in a second direction against a fixed stop to overlie the desired electrode position. The trolley is adjusted finally in the first direction during its travel toward the fixed stop by contacting a mast on the trolley with a fixed guide adjacent the stop.

摘要: A method and apparatus for feeding pulverant raw material to an arc furnace having a plurality of arcing locations defined by vertical electrodes. A vertical feed tube gravitationally conveys the raw material to a central location inside the furnace which is above the arcing locations. A rotatable deflector is located at the bottom of the feed tube and is rotated in step-wise fashion to direct raw material from the feed tube to each of the arcing locations. A fixed deflector is located at each arcing location to confine the raw material fed into the furnace predominantly to the arcing locations. By locating most of the raw material at the arcing locations, the feeding mechanism of the present invention improves the stability of the arc and the melting efficiency of the furnace.

摘要: Flame resistant fabrics having antimicrobial properties that combat odor and/or resist hazardous microorganisms. The fabrics are particularly suitable for use in clothing and more particularly in protective garments designed to be worn by individuals, such as military personnel and emergency rescue personnel, at risk of exposure to fire and extreme temperatures as well as hazardous substances. The fabrics may be formed in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to, incorporating antimicrobial fibers into the flame resistant fabric yarn or by treating the pre-formed flame resistant yarn or fabric with antimicrobial agents in a dyeing or finishing process.

摘要: Flame resistant fabrics are formed by warp and fill yams having different fiber contents. The fabrics are constructed, for example, by selection of a suitable weaving pattern, such that the body side of the fabric and the face side of the fabric have different properties. The fabrics described herein can be printable and dyeable on both sides of the fabric and are suitable for use in military and industrial garments. Methods of forming flame resistant fabrics, and methods for forming garments from the fabrics, are also described.
