Disclosed is a magnetic recording element comprising a support having coated on at least one major surface thereof a layer of a magnetic recording medium and a photosensitive layer which may be separate from or integral with the magnetic recording layer and which contains an infrared absorbing dye or its precursors. Information can be imparted to the photosensitive layer by imagewise exposure to actinic radiation which will either promote or inhibit generation or destruction of the infrared absorbing dye.

A binder composition suitable for use with magnetic media comprising:(i) a phosphonated polyurethane having a plurality of units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein: the nitrogen atom forms part of the backbone chain of the polymer, andR.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently represent members selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl groups and aryl groups of 6 to 10 carbon atoms or together R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 comprise the necessary carbon atoms to complete a ring, and(ii) a vinyl chloride copolymer having pendant ammonium functionalities.
