A trocar for placement in the lumen of a cannula to facilitate inserting the cannula through the wall of a body cavity, the trocar comprising an obturator with a point for piercing the wall of the body cavity, and a protective sleeve mounted concentrically around the obturator. The obturator retracts proximally relative to the protective sleeve after the trocar point has penetrated through the wall of the body cavity. The protective sleeve is mounted for axial movement relative to the obturator, retracting proximally in response to drag from the wall of the body cavity as the trocar is advanced through the wall, and advancing distally after the cannula has penetrated through the wall, reducing the drag on the sleeve. The distal advancement of the sleeve triggers the retraction of the obturator.

A surgical handle for use with an endoscopic instrument that is insertable into a body cavity insufflated with a gas. The surgical handle includes a housing having a mount that defines an opening for receiving the endoscopic instrument. A first elongated pusher tube is located within the housing and aligned with the mount opening. The pusher tube includes an interior passage that is in fluid communication with the endoscopic instrument. A first actuator moves the pusher tube longitudinally with respect to the mount opening. The interior passage is sized to permit the flow therethrough of insufflation gas escaping from the body cavity up to a predetermined rate, the rate being set at an amount that will not result in deflation of the body cavity.

Devices, systems and methods for compressing, cutting, incising, reconfiguring, remodeling, attaching, repositioning, supporting, dislocating or altering the composition of tissues or anatomical structures to alter their positional or force relationship to other tissues or anatomical structures. In some applications, the invention may be used to used to improve patency or fluid flow through a body lumen or cavity (e.g., to limit constriction of the urethra by an enlarged prostate gland).

Devices, systems and methods for retracting, lifting, compressing, supporting or repositioning tissues, organs, anatomical structures, grafts or other structures within the body of human or animal subjects for the purpose of treating a diseases or disorders and/or for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes and/or for research and development purposes or other purposes.

An improved surgical stapler having first and second pivotally interconnected structural members each including a handle portion and a jaw portion. The structural members are pivotally movable between a closed position wherein their jaw portions are in a closely spaced relationship to an open position wherein their jaw portions are spaced apart a substantial distance. A locking member is pivotally connected to one of the structural members for pivotal movement between a first position wherein the locking member is generally aligned with the structural member and a second position wherein the free end of the locking member is spaced apart from the outboard end of the structural member. When actuated, the locking member functions to forcefully move the structural members toward a closed position so that the tissue to be stapled can be securely clamped between the jaw portions of the instrument. A staple cartridge of novel design is removably connected to one of the first and second structural members and contains a plurality of staples for stapling together tissue disposed between the jaw portions of the instrument. A novel jaw stabilizing element is provided either on the staple cartridge or on the disposable anvil of the device for insuring proper spacing between the handle portions of the instrument and in this way functions to maintain optimum jaw closure for every tissue thickness by restricting the undesirable bending of the handle portions as the tissue to be stapled is compressed between the jaw portions.
