Abstract: In some embodiments, a method for optimizing performance of a mass spectrometer comprises using an ion source to generate ions, collisionally cooling the ions within an ion guide, directing said ions from the ion guide through at least one ion lens to a downstream mass analyzer, ramping a DC voltage applied to the ion lens, performing a mass analysis of the ions within the mass analyzer while the DC voltage applied to the ion lens is ramped, estimating performance of the mass spectrometer by measuring one or more characteristics of at least one of an ion signal and the voltage ramp, and adjusting a DC voltage applied to said at least one lens element based on said measured one or more characteristics of at least one of the ion signal and the voltage ramp so as to enhance performance of the mass spectrometer.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for controlling the temperature gradient along a differential mobility spectrometer having a differential mobility spectrometer having an inlet and an outlet, wherein the inlet is configured to receive ions transported from an ion source by a transport gas. The differential mobility spectrometer has an internal operating pressure, electrodes, and at least one voltage source for providing DC and RF voltages to the electrodes for separating ions that are transported from the inlet to the outlet. A gas port is provided near the outlet for introducing a throttle gas to control the flow rate of the transport gas through the differential mobility spectrometer and thereby adjust the ion residence time. A heater is provided for controlling the temperature of the throttle gas to minimize the temperature gradient between the inlet and outlet of the differential mobility spectrometer. A method of calibrating a DMS is also disclosed.

Abstract: An uncertainty weighted average of the equalized amounts of two or more quantifier ions is calculated from a quantitation experiment itself. n known i ions of a compound are mass analyzed over time in each of m different samples, producing n XIC peaks for each of the m samples. A reference ion j is selected that is a j ion of the n i ions or a hypothetical ion j. A ratio r(j,i) of a peak area of the j ion to a peak area of each ion of the n i ions is calculated for each of the m samples, producing m r(j,i) ratios for each of the n i ions. An expected ratio rq(j,i) is calculated for each ion of the n i ions from the m r(j,i) ratios for each of the n i ions. For each sample, the uncertainty weighted average is calculated using rq(j,i).

Abstract: In accordance with various aspects of the present teachings, methods and systems for differential mobility spectrometry are provided herein for simultaneously applying a plurality of SV/CV combinations to subsets of a population of ions generated by one or more ion sources. In various aspects, DMS devices in accordance with the present teachings can provide multiple channels (e.g., 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or more) for operating in parallel and within which different electrical fields can be generated for filtering sample ions within those channels based on the characteristic mobilities of the ions within each channel. In this manner, devices and methods in accordance with the present teachings can, in various aspects, enable improved duty cycle, increased throughput, decreased sample consumption, increased sensitivity for a plurality of ions of interest, and/or increased resolution.

Abstract: A sample analysis system having a continuous beam ion mobility filter incorporates an ion removal mechanism for removing residual ions from the ion mobility filter to reduce cross-talk. A sample to be analyzed by the sample analysis system can be entered into the continuous beam ion mobility filter, which filters the ions of the sample and passes the filtered group of ions to a detector or a mass analyzer (e.g., via an ion optics assembly disposed between the mass analyzer and the ion mobility filter), where some or all of the ions in the group are detected. The ion removal mechanism then removes all or a substantial portion of the residual ions from the ion mobility filter that are left over from the first filtered group before a second filtered group is passed through. In some aspects, the ion removal mechanism can be operated concurrent with an ion removal mechanism for removing residual ions from an ion optics assembly.
