摘要: An atmospheric shield for isolating a component from an external atmosphere is provided. The atmospheric shield includes an envelope and a base carrying a continuous channel. The base and the envelope are arranged to define an enclosure within which the component to be isolated is located, and such that a portion of the envelope extends within the continuous channel. A seal is provided within the continuous channel to seal between the envelope and the base.

摘要: In order to achieve micro alloying of protective coatings for components such as turbine blades in a turbine engine, a base metal is splutter coated by deposition of a trace element to a desired proportion. A protective layer of the base metal is then applied over the trace element to prevent further reaction or oxidation of the trace elements. A coating consumable is therefore formed from the base metal and the trace element. The consumable may be produced immediately prior to coating of the component or may be inertly stored for subsequent use. The consumable is applied by laser deposition techniques whereby a coating is formed in the melting process.

摘要: A spray nozzle 10 for a laser deposition apparatus comprises an array of nozzle apertures 16 arranged side-by-side, and a powder supply chamber 18 in fluid communication with the nozzle apertures 16. In use the powder supply chamber 18 supplies powder to the nozzle apertures 16 under pressure so as to cause a wide powder stream to be discharged from the array of nozzle apertures 16. When used with a laser deposition apparatus 100, a relatively wide coating of a uniform thickness can be deposited.

摘要: A method of fabricating or reparing a blisk (10) that comprises a plurality of blades (14) attached to the outer periphery of a disc (12). Blades (14) are formed separately from the disc (12) and are attached to stubs (13) on the disc (12) by friction welding. A metal powder, such as titanium, is sprayed onto the stubs (13) to reinforce them during the friction welding process. Once the stub (13) has been coated with the powder spray, plates (20) are fastened on the disc (12) between which the sprayed coating (18) is clamped. The plates (20) restrain the sprayed coating (18) to prevent delamination during friction welding. Once each of the blades (14) has been welded onto the respective stubs (13) the clamping plates (20) are removed and the sprayed coating (18) is machined away.
