Quadrol and homologs and analogs thereof have been found to stimulate macrophage activity in warm blooded animals. As a consequence, these compounds may be used to combat bacterial infection, remove degenerated tissue, and promote new tissue growth. Quadrol or a homolog or analog thereof may be applied topically, e.g., as the active agent in a wound dressing. The active compounds may be represented by the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are substituted alkyl (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6) in which the substituents include one or more hydroxyl groups attached to carbon atoms other than the alpha carbon atom, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are alkyl or substituted alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6), and n=2 to about 6. Preferably R.sub.1 through R.sub.4 are the same and are 2-hydroxyalkyl.

These monomers are polymerizable into hydrogel polymers which are extremely hydrophilic. These hydrogel polymers are useful in the preparation of wound dressings. These polymers form complexes with polyvalent metal ions such as Ca, Mg, Mn and Cu, and possess macrophage stimulating activity in addition to the useful properties possessed by other acrylate and methacrylate hydrogel polymers.

The medical patch system includes a second medical patch adapted for insertion into the central area bounded by the outer locating ring after the inner patch is separated from the outer locating ring. The second medical patch includes a second outer locating ring securable to the surface, and a second inner patch section, separable from the second outer locating ring, disposed within a second central area bounded by the second outer locating ring. The first and second outer locating rings have adhesive layers for securing the outer locating rings to a surface. The adhesive layers on the respective outer locating rings have different sizes, shapes or patterns to minimize skin irritation.

In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a non-woven fiber assembly comprising one or more fibers wherein each fiber contains: a hydrophilic component; and an elastomeric component, and wherein the non-woven fiber assembly further comprises an adhesive component. In still another embodiment, the present invention relates to a non-woven fiber assembly comprising one or more fibers wherein each fiber contains: a hydrophilic component; an elastomeric component; and an adhesive component, wherein the hydrophilic component, the elastomeric component and the adhesive component are all contained within each fiber. Also disclosed is a method of making the afore-mentioned non-woven fiber assemblies. Additionally, a medical dressing made from the non-woven fiber assemblies of the present invention is disclosed.
