    摘要: A pulsed fiber laser and associated electronics contained in a miniature package is disclosed. The Pulsed Fiber Laser Source (PFLS) can be a single-stage high gain master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) type fiber laser source. The PFLS can include a distributed feedback (DFB) laser, a narrowband optical filter, a broad area high-power pump diode, and Erbium/Ytterbium (Er/Yb) double cladding doped fiber. Input electrical pulses drive the DFB laser diode to emit optical pulses that are then amplified by the optical amplifier. Active and passive cooling elements may be incorporated for continuous operation without rest time. Passive cooling for intermittent pulsed applications allows the laser source to be miniaturized by eliminating active cooling elements and associated power supplies and controllers. Low duty cycle relaxes drive requirements and further reduces the size. The PFLS can be used for long distance ranging, communication by retro-modulation, and communication in presence of atmospheric attenuation.

    摘要: An apparatus and method of hermetically sealing a pump module for a double cladded fiber in a pump module. The apparatus includes a hermetic pump module for coupling light from a pump source into an optical waveguide. The hermetic pump module includes a hermetically sealed housing, wherein the hermetically sealed housing contains an all-glass double cladded fiber with an outer cladding, an inner cladding, and a core, wherein the double cladded fiber includes a v-groove that extends through the outer cladding into the inner cladding, a pump source that emits a light, and a transparent substrate, bonded to the glass outer cladding with a transparent adhesive, wherein the light passes through the transparent substrate and into the all-glass double cladded fiber and the v-groove couples the light into the all-glass double cladded fiber. Alternatively, the substrate may be eliminated and the light directly coupled into the all-glass double cladded fiber.

    摘要: A compact monostatic optical transmitter/receiver device simultaneously transmits an optical beam and collects returning light using a single lens or optical aperture. The system provides automatic alignment of the transmit and receive aperture and is compatible with fiber-coupled laser sources. Transmit light is emitted from a double-cladding fiber core while received light is coupled into the inner cladding of the same fiber. The transmit light propagating in the core and the received light propagating in the inner cladding are separated by the means of a diplexer comprised of a fused fiber coupler or a fiber-coupled micro-optic device.

A UV illumination source illuminates a side surface of said electrical-optic crystal with UV light. An output mirror receives an output from said Q-switch and produces a laser emission.

    摘要: Featured is a high power, broadband superfluorescent source with very low relative intensity noise (RIN) including a seed source, a modulator operably coupled to the seed source and a polarization maintaining (PM) amplifier operably coupled to the modulator. The output of the seed source is processed in the modulator so the modulator outputs a polarized optical output to the PM amplifier. The PM amplifier amplifies the modulated, polarized optical output so as to provide an amplified polarized optical output therefrom. Also featured is a feedback circuit operably coupled to the PM amplifier to control the transmission of the modulator so as to minimize the amplitude fluctuations in the output signal. Such a source is advantageous in high precision fiber optical rotation sensors and multiplexed strain sensing arrays.

    摘要: A hermetically sealed pump module for use with fiber devices is disclosed. The method and apparatus disclosed enable a pump module to be constructed that has a high coupling tolerance and which is inexpensive and easy to manufacture. The pump module may comprise a transparent window through which a pump beam is coupled from a laser diode into the inner cladding of a double cladding fiber. The transparent window also may serve as a substrate for the inner cladding of the double cladding fiber. The laser diode is sealed within the pump module housing with a lid and the window, which is bonded to the lid. The housing may contain a heat sink, heat-spreading sub-mount and a Peltier cooler.

    摘要: We introduce a novel high average power (>100 mW) fiber optic source, using a wavelength converter based on optical parametric amplification in a nonlinear fiber. In the most fundamental embodiment, light at two different wavelengths is used to generate light at a third wavelength through optical parametric amplification in a highly non-linear fiber. The method provides high average output power at wavelengths that are not accessible by other means. The source has high optical conversion efficiency (>20%), and it can be tuned over tens of nanometers.
