Abstract:
A storage stable isocyanate-reactive composition has ethylene oxide content from 1 wt % to 50 wt %, based on the total weight of an isocyanate-reactive component that includes a polyol component, a catalyst component, and a blowing agent component. The polyol component includes at least one polyol, the catalyst component includes at least one amine catalyst, and the blowing agent component includes at least one hydrohaloolefin based blowing agent. The isocyanate-reactive component is storable at least at one of room temperature and a higher temperature for a period of at least 1 day with a less than 10 second change in gel time when reacted with an isocyanate component at an isocyanate index from 100 to 150, compared to when the same isocyanate-reactive component is stored for a period of less than 1 day at room temperature and reacted with the same isocyanate component at the same isocyanate index from 100 to 150.
Abstract:
A method of reducing the number or size of voids in a polyurethane comprises reacting the formulation components in a container having an inner surface, or having a liner that has an inner surface, that has been modified to reduce the shear forces that normally accompany introduction of such components into a container. This is done by modifying the inner container's or container liner's surface by profiling and/or engraving it, or by including as a liner a mesh. The profiling and/or engraving or mesh serves to alter the formulation's flow dynamics such that the polyurethane has fewer and/or smaller voids, i.e., has a more uniform density, than polyurethanes formed without the modification.
Abstract:
Rigid polyurethane foams are made using a mixture of polyols that includes 4 to 33% by weight of triisopropanolamine. The mixture of polyols is reacted with an aromatic polyisocyanate in the presence of a blowing agent, a foam-stabilizing surfactant and a urethane catalyst to produce the foam. The foams are useful as thermal insulation layers in multilayer thermal insulation assemblies such as appliance cabinets and walls for industrial and commercial freezers and refrigerators.

Abstract:
Polyurethane thermal insulating foam is made in the presence of a small amount of cis- and/or trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobut-2-ene and a hydrocarbon blowing agent. Very low lambda values are obtained.
Abstract:
Insulating unit are disclosed which are prepared by a cavity-filling, fast-gelling rigid polyurethane foam based on a formulation comprising a polyol component which contains at least 5 weight percent of an amine-initiated polyols and 1.4 to 4 parts by weight of a catalyst package whereby the catalyst package contains at least one amine catalyst and the weight percent nitrogen present in the amine-initiated polyol to weight percent nitrogen present in the catalyst system is from 2 to 8. The formulation is injected into the cavity and the pressure in the cavity is subjected to reduced atmospheric pressure to achieve the rigid foam having a thermal conductivity of less than about 19 mW/mK at 10° C. average plate temperature.

Abstract:
Rigid polyurethane foam is made in a vacuum assisted process using a blowing agent mixture that includes water and hydrofluoroolefin and/or hydrofluorochloroolefin. In preferred embodiments, the blowing agent mixture further includes a hydro carbon such as cyclopentane.
