HIGHLY BRANCHED HYDROCARBONS SUITABLE AS HIGH-OCTANE FUELS CAN BE OBTAINED RAPIDLY AND EFFICIENTLY BY A COUPLING REACTION IN WHICH REACTIVE ORGANO-HALIDES ARE CONTACTED WITH AN ORGANO ALUMINUM, UNDER REACTION CONDITIONS, IN A NON-REACTIVE SOLVENT.
Abstract:
IONIC CROSSLINKIN IS INTRODUCED INTO AN UNCURED BUTYLRUBBER BY HFALOGENATION OF BUTYL RUBBER, DEHYDROHALOGENATION TO FORM CONJUGATED DOUBLE BONDS AND REACTION OF AN ETHYLENICALLY UNSATURATED COMPOUND SUCH AS MALEIC ANHYDRIDE WITH THIS CONJUGATED DOUBLE BOND SYSTEM TO FORM A GRAFT POLYMER. THE GRAFT POLYMER IN THEN REACTED WITH A METALLIC SALT OR AN AMINE TO FORM AN IONIC HYDROCARBON POLYMER USEFUL FOR MOLDED OR EXTRUDED PRODUCTS.

A CATALYST IS PREPARED BY REACTING ALKYL ALUMINUM DIHALIDE IN THE ABSENCE OF A HYDROCARBON SOLVENT, WITH A COBALT SALT TO FORM A BLUE LIQUID COMPLEX. THE CATALYST SO FORMED MAY BE USED TO PREPARE HIGHLY UNSATURATED POLYMERS AND COPOLYMERS OF CATIONICALLY POLYMERIZABLE MONOMERS. THE POLYMERS OF THIS INVENTION ARE RUBBERY HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT MATERIALS. THE PREFERRED MONOMERS ARE ISOBUTYLENE AND ISOPRENE. THE PREFERRED ALKYL ALUNIMUM HALIDE IS ALUMINUM ETHYL DIHALIDE AND THE PREFERRED COBALT SALTS ARE COCL2 COBALT BROMIDE AND COBALT ACETONYL ACETONATE.

Substantially gel-free, high molecular weight, high unsaturation copolymers of isobutylene and conjugated dienes having a number average molecular weight of at least 120,000 and a mole percent of unsaturation of at least 5 percent and the process for preparing said polymers which comprises carrying out the polymerization in a homogeneous phase, introducing the catalyst comprising an aluminum halide to the system in a soluble form and carrying the reaction out at a temperature of less than -100*C.
