摘要:
A high etch cleaner for aluminum and aluminum alloy substrates that leads to enhanced corrosion protective performance of a variety of anti-corrosion pretreatments. The cleaner comprises low levels of silicate of from 0 to 250 ppm, 50 to 500 ppm of at least one chelator, and has a pH of from 11.0 to 13.5. The cleaner may be used to etch from 0.5 to 4.0 grams per meter squared from substrates. Substrates treated with the cleaner and then coated with a variety of anti-corrosion pretreatments and outer coatings show enhanced corrosion resistance compared to substrates cleaned with standard cleaners that have low etch rates, high silicate levels and no chelating agents followed by anti-corrosion pretreatments and outer coatings.

Equations have been developed to predict the amount of sludge formed during, and the values of several other characteristics of, zinc phosphating processes. Using these equations, novel compositions that achieve low sludge without sacrificing other characteristics of good zinc phosphate coatings have been discovered.

Concentrates containing (a) an hydroxylamine sulfate accelerator, and (b) zinc, nickel, manganese, and phosphate ions are formulated into aqueous coating solutions for treating metal surfaces, such as ferrous, zinc, and aluminum surfaces. In the process of using this solution, hydroxylamine ions become depleted or reduced in concentration in the applied solution. A replenishing solution is added for reusing the solution until the replenished coating solution reaches a sulfate level of no more than 14 g/l.

A solution in water of fluorometallate and phosphate anions, divalent and/or trivalent metal cations, and polyhydroxylaminomethyl substituted polymers of vinyl phenol(s) provides an effective and economical post-rinse for conversion coatings, particularly predominantly zinc phosphate coatings that also contain manganese and may contain other cations.

In a process for the chemical pretreatment before painting of composite metal structures that contain aluminum or aluminum alloy portions together with steel, galvanized steel and/or alloy-galvanized steel portions, in a first step the metal structure is treated with a zinc phosphating solution that forms a surface-covering crystalline zinc phosphate layer on steel and on galvanized or alloy-galvanized steel, but without forming a zinc phosphate layer on the aluminum portions, and then in a second step the metal structure is brought into contact with a treatment solution that does not excessively dissolve the crystalline zinc phosphate layer on steel, galvanized and/or alloy-galvanized steel, but forms a conversion layer on the aluminum portions.

Metal surfaces are effectively cleaned of grease and oil using an aqueous composition containing surfactant, alkalinizing agent, metal corrosion inhibitor, brightening agent and relatively high levels of glycol ether.

Zinc phosphate coatings for metal surfaces and phosphating process. Concentrates containing (a) hydroxylamine sulfate and (b) zinc, nickel, manganese and phosphate ions are formulated into aqueous coating solutions for treating metal surfaces, including ferrous, zinc and aluminum surfaces.
摘要:
The phosphate concentration, and therefore the pollution potential, of conventional high quality phosphating compositions containing zinc, manganese, and, optionally, nickel or copper cations, can be reduced without loss of corrosion protective value of the phosphate coatings formed by maintaining concentrations of active ingredients within prescribed ranges. Under the most preferred conditions, the corrosion resistance of phosphated and then painted cold rolled steel and the paint adhesion to phosphated and then painted electrogalvanized steel are improved over values obtained with the now most commonly used commercial high quality low zinc phosphating processes.
