    摘要: A high etch cleaner for aluminum and aluminum alloy substrates that leads to enhanced corrosion protective performance of a variety of anti-corrosion pretreatments. The cleaner comprises low levels of silicate of from 0 to 250 ppm, 50 to 500 ppm of at least one chelator, and has a pH of from 11.0 to 13.5. The cleaner may be used to etch from 0.5 to 4.0 grams per meter squared from substrates. Substrates treated with the cleaner and then coated with a variety of anti-corrosion pretreatments and outer coatings show enhanced corrosion resistance compared to substrates cleaned with standard cleaners that have low etch rates, high silicate levels and no chelating agents followed by anti-corrosion pretreatments and outer coatings.

    摘要: Excellent adhesion to subsequently applied paint or elastomer is obtained by coating a metal substrate with a phosphate conversion coating by contact with a liquid phosphating solution that contains zinc cations, phosphate anions, and at least one adhesion promoter selected from (i) film-forming organic substances, (ii) polymers of vinyl phenols modified by substitution of substituted aminomethyl moieties on their aromatic rings, (iii) inorganic oxides of one of the elements silicon, aluminum, titanium, and zirconium. Preferably, the phosphating solution also contains manganese and nickel cations and either iron cations or hydroxylamine. If adhesion to paint is desired, the adhesion promoter preferably is an acrylic film-forming substance, while if adhesion to elastomers is desired, the adhesion promoter preferably is a polymer of vinyl phenol and the phosphating solution preferably also contains calcium cations.

    摘要: When a phosphate ester or a dispersed wax is added to a conventional liquid phosphate conversion coating composition, the resulting phosphate coating formed on a metal substrate has a lower coefficient of friction after being oiled than it would have had if the additive had been omitted. The corrosion resistance and paint adhesion properties expected from the conversion coating are not substantially diminished by the additive. Particularly good results are achieved if the phosphate coating composition contains calcium and ferrous cations and the liquid phosphate conversion coating composition is dried into place on the substrate.

    摘要: A multipurpose treatment composition for metal surfaces comprises phosphate ions, fluorometallate ions, water soluble polymers containing substituted aminomethylene moieties bonded to benzene rings which also have an oxygen atom bonded to another carbon atom in the same ring, and a distinct kind of film-forming polymer. The compositions are free from chromium and other heavy metals that cause serious pollution problems in some prior art treatment compositions. Coating layers formed in a process according to the invention are effective for at least three different purposes: increasing adhesion of and corrosion protection from subsequently applied paints or other protective coatings with a largely organic matrix; without any subsequently applied protective coating, providing at least temporary protection against staining and development of white rust on zinc or zinc alloy surfaces treated in a process according to the invention, and providing sufficient lubricity to permit roll forming of sheet metals treated in a process according to the invention without the need for additional liquid lubricants such as oil.
