In a method, a gain medium is provided having an absorption coefficient that varies with wavelength. An absorption coefficient curve of the absorption coefficient or a range of wavelengths comprises peaks and valleys. A pump module is operated to output pump energy at an operating wavelength within one of the valleys, at which the absorption coefficient is approximately less than 40% of the absorption coefficient at an adjacent peak of the absorption coefficient curve defining the valley. The pump energy is directed through the gain medium. A portion of the pump energy is absorbed with the gain medium and laser light is emitted from the gain medium responsive to the absorbed pump energy. The non-absorbed pump energy (feedback pump energy) is fed back to the pump module. The operating wavelength of the pump energy is stabilized using the feedback pump energy.

A laser resonator comprises a cylindrical gain medium, a cooling system and a coupling member. The cylindrical gain medium comprises a central axis, an outer side surface, two opposing end faces and a first depression in the outer side surface. The cooling system comprises a cooling jacket disposed around the gain medium that defines a cooling cavity, in which cooling fluid is guided over the side surface of the gain medium. In one embodiment, the cooling jacket comprises a second depression. The coupling member is received within the first and second depressions. Movement of the first depression along the central axis relative to the cooling jacket is restricted by the coupling member.

A medical laser delivery system is disclosed which includes a laser generating a high power, pulsed, treatment beam. The beam is coupled to an optical fiber which is placed adjacent to a tissue site immersed in a fluid medium. The wavelength of the laser light and the energy of the pulses is selected so that the fluid medium will be quickly vaporized creating a vapor bubble around the end of the fiber. The end surface of the fiber is angled in a manner such that after the vapor bubble is formed, the laser output will be totally internally reflected at the end surface and be redirected out of the side of the fiber.

The annular energy distribution in the output beam of a laser having an unstable resonator is evenly distributed across the entire beam profile by a synthesizer comprising a pair of mirrors adjacent to the output end of the resonator and operative on the output beam to redirect part of the beam from the annular outer portion to the energy-vacant central portion. One of the pair of mirrors is partially optically transmissive and concavely shaped and is disposed to reflect and converge part of the outer beam portion toward the other mirror and to transmit the balance. The other mirror is highly reflective and convexly shaped and is disposed to redirect and collimate the reflected beam part within the central portion toward the concave mirror parallel to the outer beam portion. Part of the twice reflected beam is transmitted through the concave mirror and the balance is again reflected and further converged toward the convex mirror as the cycle is repeated several times to synthesize an output beam with a substantially uniform energy profile.

Laser apparatus with an electro-optic Q-switch assembly comprises a lasing medium which produces an unpolarized light beam when pumped, a polarizing beam splitter dividing the unpolarized beam into two orthogonally polarized parallel sub-beams, and a totally reflecting turning element which returns each sub-beam to the beam splitter along the path of the other sub-beam. A Q-switch is located in the path of one of the sub-beams. When the Q-switch is energized, the reflected polarization-shifted sub-beams are recombined at the splitter and pass through the lasing medium and adjacent partially-reflecting element as the output. When the Q-switch is deenergized, the sub-beams are dumped at the splitter which prevents the laser from oscillating.
