摘要:
Fabrication techniques for making nickel boron stranded wire braze preforms are described. The techniques involve the provision of the wire material in a stranded form having a large surface to volume ratio. This general form consists of a plurality of fine wires, having the desired cross-sectional area, which may be twisted or braided to produce the preform.

A filler metal material particularly suited for brazing titanium base articles is described. In a preferred embodiment, the material is characterized by a central portion of titanium, and adjacent layers of copper and nickel. The solidus and liquidus temperatures of the filler metal are about 925.degree. and 945.degree. C., respectively.

Honeycomb structures, such as those used in turbine engine abradable seals, are provided with a uniform density filling of a suitable abradable material. The abradable material is prepared as a tape preform using an organic binder. The preform is forced into the honeycomb using a rubber tool.

The bonding of materials by the transient liquid phase process is improved through the use of multiple boronized interlayer foils. By providing the interlayer in the form of multiple foils a reservoir of liquid material is formed during the bonding process which eliminates the previously encountered porosity. The use of multiple foils is especially appropriate when bonding fine grained materials.

Disclosed is an improved method and apparatus for removing damaged or worn vanes which are brazed or otherwise metallurgically attached between the concentric inner and outer shroud members of a gas turbine compressor stator. The method involves punching one of the attached vane ends in the radial direction relative to the concentric shroud members with sufficient force to shear the metallurgical joints holding the vane in the shroud slots. During punching, the shroud members are rigidly supported against deformation in the vicinity of the attached vane ends and the vane itself is supported laterally to prevent buckling thereof. With the invention, a stator can be repaired with no diminution in structural strength as compared to a new part. A punch and die assembly for use in removing a damaged vane is also disclosed.
