The invention provides a low pH granular detergent composition comprised of biodegradable components, together which provide a detergent with improved cleaning performance. The granular detergent composition comprises: (a) from about 5% to about 50% by weight of a detergent surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic, nonionic, zwitterionic, ampholytic, cationic and mixtures thereof; (b) from about 5% to about 50% by weight of a non-phosphorous detergent builder; (c) from about 0% to about 5% of an enzyme component; and (d) from about 0.25% to about 5% of a compound selected from the group consisting of tris(hydroxymethyl)amino-methane aminomethyl propanediol, aminoethyl propanediol and mixtures thereof. The detergent composition has a pH of from about 8.0 to about 9.0 and is substantially free of phosphates and polyacrylates.

The detergent composition comprises: (a) from about 10% to 20% by weight of an alkyl sulfate surfactant; (b) from about 5% to 15% by weight of an alkyl ethoxy sulfate surfactant having an average degree of ethoxylation of from about 1 to about 3; (c) from about 1% to about 5% by weight of a linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant; (d) from about 0.1% to about 0.5% by weight of an amine oxide surfactant; (e) from about 35% to about 45% by weight of an aluminosilicate builder; and (f) from about 15% to about 20% by weight of sodium carbonate. The detergent composition is in the form of detergent agglomerates which are free of phosphates. The alkyl sulfate surfactant, alkyl ethoxy sulfate surfactant, and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant have improved solubility in an aqueous laundering solution, especially those kept at cold temperatures, i.e. 5.degree. C. to 30.degree. C.

The binder is an anionic synthetic surfactant paste or a water-soluble polymer containing at least about 50% by weight of ethylene oxide, and optionally may contain minor amounts of ethoxylated nonionic surfactant. Particularly, a peroxide compound and an organic acid are sequentially dispersed into the volumetric space, preventing peracids from being formed until the two reactants contact each other on the surface to be disinfected. In some embodiments, any of the dispersed aqueous compositions can optionally be electrostatically charged. Additionally, a system for sequentially dispersing the peracid reactant compounds by electrostatic spraying is provided.

Aqueous compositions comprising peracid reactant compounds, particularly hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid, are sequentially dispersed into the area, preventing peracids from being formed until the two peracid reactant compounds contact each other on the surface to be disinfected. Additionally, aqueous compositions containing peracid reactant compounds can further comprise ethanol to both decrease the surface tension of the droplets and enhance the reactants' biocidal activity. Peracid reactant compounds can be sequentially dispersed as electrostatically-charged droplets, so that droplets of a first aqueous composition containing at least one peracid reactant compound are dispersed with a polarity opposite that of a subsequently-applied second aqueous composition containing at least one peracid reactant compound, driving formation of a peracid on the surface in situ.
