Abstract: 914,473. Extracting solids with liquids. F.M.C. CORPORATION. March 23, 1961 [March 28, 1960], No. 10581/61. Classes 84 (1) and 129. In a continuous process for the solvent extraction of a solid wherein the solid is confined under a high pressure atmosphere and preferably high temperature and intermittently sprayed with a high-pressure spray of solvent, and the spent solids and solvent extract are removed from confinement with a minimum loss of pressure, solids to be extracted are fed via the pressure feed valve 7 into the lower end of an inclined pressure vessel 4 wherein it is extracted and conveyed to the upper end of the vessel by the screw conveyer 6 and discharged by means of the discharge valve 9. The highpressure atmosphere in the vessel is controlled and maintained by means of the automatic control valve 52 in conduit 51 and the temperature controller 52a affecting the gas source, and vent valve 53 controlled by an automatic pressure valve 54 affecting a vent in the vessel. Solvent under pressure from pump 31, heat exchanger 32, meter 39 and swivel joint 28 enters the hollow shaft 11 of the conveyer 6 and issues intermittently from the aligned nozzles 21 when they are facing the solid (i.e. generally downwards), the time and period of flow being determined and controlled by the cam 44 (on spindle 14 connected with tube 11) and actuator 43 which operates the switch 42 controlling the solenoid-operated impulse control valve 41. Entry of solvent is also controlled by the automatic control valve 38 actuated by the liquid level control 37, thus preventing the liquid level in vessel 4 exceeding a predetermined height, and by means of a piston 23 close fitting in tube 11 which is movable by shaft 26 and which may be used to prevent the access of solvent to one or more sucessive nozzles at the lower end of tube 11, thus regulating the quantity of solvent being delivered. The liquid extract is withdrawn from the lower end of the vessel when the concentration of extract exceeds a predetermined minimum as measured by the concentration controller 58 connected to valve 58a and may pass via settling tank 59, filter 61 and cooler 62 for further processing, the solid being largely held back in the extraction vessel by the bevelled-edged disc 18 on the lower end of the tubular shaft 11. The process is described with reference to the extraction of coffee with water using water as solvent and steam to provide the high pressure atmosphere. Reference is also made to the extraction of tannin from tanbark and protein supplement or soup stock from bone.
