摘要: A light deflector includes a plurality of individual acousto-optical light waveguide deflectors being integrated on a common substrate and disposed relative to one or more directions from which or to which a light beam to be deflected will be supplied so that the resolved points is equal to the sum of the resolved points of each of the individual deflectors. Preferably, the individual light deflectors are disposed and aligned on the substrate so that the deflection ranges of the resolved points lie next to one another in a prescribed surface and with the ranges contacting one another without gaps.

摘要: A planar waveguide lens is characterized in that the same is a gradient lens, whereby the refractive index profile transversely to the lens axis extends approximately parabolically. The lens may be constructed to be multi-mode or may be constructed to be single-mode in the spatial direction perpendicular to the lens axis and perpendicular to the axis in which the indicated change of the refractive index profile extends. Grid structures are provided for dividing the light. The grid structures may be permanent, electro-optically produced or acousto-optically produced. For single mode fibers, the grid structures are produced by acoustic surface waves, while for multi-mode fibers, the grid structures are produced by way of acoustical volume waves.

摘要: A device for coupling an incoming light conducting fiber cable to an outgoing light conducting fiber cable characterized by a pair of housings connected together and each receiving a holder which holders center the fibers in one cable in relation to the fibers of the cable which is centered by the other holder. The improvement comprises the holder includes a substrate having a first guide foil disposed on one surface and a second guide foil disposed on the opposite surface, each of said foils having aligned channels for receiving light conducting fibers with the channels of the first foil in a direction leading away from the substrate possessing a cross-sectional profile, decreasing to the diameter of the light conducting fibers. In one embodiment of the invention, the channels are apertures which are aligned with apertures or bores in the substrate and a modification of this embodiment includes forming the first guide foil of a plurality of layers with each layer having apertures converging towards the outer surface thereof with the outermost layer having the smallest aperture. In another embodiment, the channels in the first and second guide foils are arranged as perpendicular channels which extend beyond the peripheral surface of the substrate and, preferably, the light conducting fibers received in the channels are secured on the periphery of the substrate.

摘要: A device for coupling an incoming light conducting fiber cable to an outgoing light conducting fiber cable characterized by at least one housing and means secured in the housing for holding the end faces of the light conducting fibers of each cable in centered relationship to each other and for optically interconnecting the end faces of the light conducting fibers of the incoming cable to the end faces of the light conducting fibers of the outgoing cable. The means includes at least one holder having a guide body with guide channels for the light conducting fibers extending inward from one surface of the body and a cover member disposed on the guide body to close off the guide channels so that the light guiding fibers disposed in the channels are held therein. The guide body of each channel is preferably produced by a series of production steps while in a flat state either by mechanically forming the grooves, depositing material to form the grooves or developing a layer of material by a photolithographic process. Subsequent to forming the grooves, the guide body may be wound and secured on a cylindrical substrate so that the channels are disposed on a curved surface. The device may have a single holder to form a non-detachable connecting device, a pair of holders which are secured in an aligned position and form a detachable coupling device or a pair of holders mounted for relative rotation to form an optical switch.

摘要: A method and apparatus for positioning a laser diode with respect to a coupling optic for a waveguide to obtain the optimum light transmission characterized by providing a reflecting reference plane or surface extending perpendicular to the axis of the waveguide adjacent the coupling optic, projecting light through the waveguide and coupling optic onto the reflecting surface, measuring the amount of light reflected into the waveguide and adjusting the axial position of the waveguide and optic relative to the reflecting surface to obtain the optimum value, then placing the semiconductor with the facet in the reference plane and either operating the semiconductor to provide light for coupling into the waveguide and adjusting the relative positions in a transverse plane to the axis of the waveguide to obtain the optimum transmission or operating the semiconductor laser as a detector and coupling light into the waveguide at a point spaced from the laser to project into the detector and making adjustments in the transverse direction to obtain the optimum reading. The reflecting surface can be either a separate reflecting device or the facet of the laser. The apparatus includes two members each having an abutting surface with one of the members positioning the waveguide with the coupling optic to lie along an axis perpendicular to the abutting surface and the other member positioning the semiconductor laser with the facet lying in the plane of the abutting surface.

摘要: A prism coupler for coupling light into and out of an optical waveguide and characterized by the temperature dependency being eliminated. This is accomplished by a skillful selection of the prism angle and the prism material of a single prism or by combining two prisms of different materials whose indices of refraction and prism angles are selected to compensate for the effects of temperature on both the prism and the waveguide. Preferably, the waveguide is doped in a substrate of LiNbO.sub.3 and the prism utilizes a compound prism having a first prism consisting of LiNbO.sub.3 and a second prism of polystyrene.
