The device comprises a substrate and an optical waveguide component affixed to the substrate with a glass frit fusion seal formed and locked within a recessed void in the substrate, the glass frit fusion seal being the fused product of a low melting glass frit. The recessed void in the substrate includes a region for receiving the optical waveguide component and an intersecting region that secures the placement of the glass frit fusion seal. The optical waveguide component is affixed to the substrate in order to control temperature varying optical properties of the component.

A device for coupling an incoming light conducting fiber cable to an outgoing light conducting fiber cable characterized by at least one housing and means secured in the housing for holding the end faces of the light conducting fibers of each cable in centered relationship to each other and for optically interconnecting the end faces of the light conducting fibers of the incoming cable to the end faces of the light conducting fibers of the outgoing cable. The means includes at least one holder having a guide body with guide channels for the light conducting fibers extending inward from one surface of the body and a cover member disposed on the guide body to close off the guide channels so that the light guiding fibers disposed in the channels are held therein. The guide body of each channel is preferably produced by a series of production steps while in a flat state either by mechanically forming the grooves, depositing material to form the grooves or developing a layer of material by a photolithographic process. Subsequent to forming the grooves, the guide body may be wound and secured on a cylindrical substrate so that the channels are disposed on a curved surface. The device may have a single holder to form a non-detachable connecting device, a pair of holders which are secured in an aligned position and form a detachable coupling device or a pair of holders mounted for relative rotation to form an optical switch.

A ferrule for an optical fiber connector having open fiber clamping grooves. The ferrule has a body having a plurality of open grooves for clamping the terminating end sections of optical fibers. At least a section of the longitudinal opening of the groove is provided with opposing lips to provide a clamping effect. The width of the longitudinal opening defined between the lips along at least a section of the grooves is narrower than the diameter of the optical fibers to create a tight fit. The grooves and the width of the longitudinal groove openings are shaped and sized to retain the fibers without any clearance to allow for movement of the fiber relative to the groove. Similar grooves may be provided in the ferrule body for alignment guide pins. The grooves are precision formed by high throughput processes, such as stamping and extrusion.

There is provided a glass substrate having a V-groove portion for arranging an optical fiber core and a countersunk portion for containing an optical fiber coated portion, formed on the extension of the V-groove portion, on the surface thereof. The surface roughness of an inside side face of the countersunk portion is 1 &mgr;m or less in Rmax, or 0.2 &mgr;m or less in Ra at least at the connecting portion of the V-groove portion and the countersunk portion. The glass substrate is manufactured by a two-stage molding method in which a first molding step for forming a concave portion in the surface of a glass substrate molded body by grinding or pressing, and a second molding step for pressing the glass substrate molded body obtained by the first molding step from the top and bottom surfaces while reheating the molded body are performed.
