Abstract:
Discloses an electrical insulator that comprises an improved joint for attaching the insulator hardware to the porcelain body of the insulator. The porcelain has a roughened surface, and the joint comprises a thin release coating of solid polymeric material on the roughened surface, a thicker coating of a polymer filled with a dry lubricant overlying the release coating but unbonded thereto, and a filled polymer in the space between the hardware and thicker coating that is bonded to both the thicker coating and the hardware. The release coating prevents the thicker coating from adhering to the roughened surface of the porcelain but is so thin that the thicker coating is still able to mechanically interlock with the roughened surface.
Abstract:
A lubricant for working aluminium comprises an olefin or olefins of formula wherein R and R1 are hydrogen or fluorine, R1 may additionally be mono-, di- or trifluoromethyl and R11 is a saturated straight chain alkyl or fluoroalkyl radical having at least 8 carbon atoms. Preferred are straight-chain olefins or fluoro-olefins having 12 to 25 carbon atoms and unsaturation in the 1 or 2 position, and include cetene; 3,3,4-trifluorohexadecene-1; 1,1,1,2-tetrafluorohexadecene-2 and mixtures of olefins derived from the cracking of paraffin or the Fischer-Tropsch process. The olefins may be used by themselves, or with lubricating mineral oils or diesters, or diluted or dissolved in benzene, chlorinated hydrocarbons or kerosene. They may be also used in the form of aqueous emulsions or as greases. The effectiveness of the lubricants is compared with that of saturated compounds, or with compounds wherein the unsaturation is not in the 1- or 2-position.
Abstract:
A hydrogen sensor unit with a palladium alloy tube open at both ends that changes length reversibly dependent on hydrogen concentration has an improved mounting for substantially unconstrained volumetric change in all directions, so as to be usable with a large range of hydrogen concentrations. Both the inner and outer surfaces of the tube are contacted by the ambient atmosphere. Associated signal processing equipment continuously derives the percent hydrogen by volume. Applications include monitoring a nuclear reactor and a transformer tank for malfunctions.
Abstract:
Discloses an electric circuit breaker that includes electromagnetic assist means for opposing the magnetic contactrepulsion forces developed when a high current flows through the circuit breaker. The electromagnetic assist means comprises flexible conductive means in series with the contacts of the breaker for carrying the inter-contact current through a loopshaped path where a magnetic closing force is developed on the contacts. Only a minor portion of the total inter-contact current is conducted through the loop-shaped path. For carrying the remaining and major portion of the current, additional flexible conductive means is connected in series with the contacts and in parallel with the loop-shaped path, and this additional conductive means follows a path separate from and independent of the loop-shaped path. Sufficient closing force is obtained from the minor portion of the total current that passes through the loop-shaped path to hold the contacts engaged during the highest current surges for which the breaker is rated.
