Poly(propylene carbonates) are prepared from propylene oxide and CO2 with less than 10% cyclic propylene carbonate by product using cobalt based catalysts of structure preferably in combination with salt cocatalyst, very preferably cocatalyst where the cation is PPN+ and the anion is Cl− or OBzF5−. Novel products include poly(propylene carbonates) having a stereoregularity greater than 90% and/or a regioregularity of greater than 90%.

Poly(ethylene-co-syndiotactic propylene) functionalized with group(s), that enable crosslinking, e.g., vinyl or anhydride group(s), in admixture with crosslinking agent and filler is subjected to crosslinking reaction to provide filled copolymer. The presence of propylene in syndiotactic sequences provides lower entanglement molecular weight compared to other propylene placement and therefore allows more filler to be present than for other propylene placement. Crosslinking provides filled materials with good elastomeric properties.

The invention is a novel family of polyolefins characterized by chain-walking defects of the type that add extra backbone carbons per monomer. These polyolefins display a large decrease in crystallinity relative to polyolefins known in the art. Specifically, the reduction in crystallinity is much greater than for earlier polypropylenes with a matched content of stereo or 1-alkene type defects. The claimed polyolefins can be made by a late metal Ni(II) catalyst. The defects in the polyolefin backbone are generated by a chain waling mechanism in which three or more carbons per monomer are added to the polymer backbone instead of two, as in conventional polymerization or copolymerization methods of alpha olefins. The novel polyolefins can be used in applications such as plastic wrapping, thin films, co-extrusion layers or molded parts in the absence of polymer blending or copolymerization. The cost of materials production can be reduced.

One step ortho-alkylation of anilines with styrenes to give chiral anilines is obtained using a strong acid catalyst, e.g. CF3SO3H. Condensation of the product to give ligand and metallation gives complex which catalyzes polymerization of propylene to give isotactic propylene or regiorandom propylene of low PDI or blocks thereof, depending on polymerization temperature.
