A viscous fluid clutch includes a rotor attached to an output from an engine, a stator attached to a fan assembly and a coil assembly having at least a portion attached to the stator. A first gap is defined between the rotor and the stator and a second gap is defined between the rotor and the coil assembly. The first and second gaps are filled with a magneto rheological (MR) fluid. The coil assembly creates a magnetic field in the first and second gaps to vary the viscosity of the MR fluid to produce a variable speed viscous fluid clutch. The coil assembly includes coil windings which are supplied with power through a slip ring assembly. Both the coil windings and the wiring between the slip ring assembly and the coil windings are isolated from the magneto rheological fluid.

A viscous clutch of the magnetorheological fluid type includes an input drive member and an output driven member. A selectively energizable magnetorheological fluid is disposed in a working gap between one cylindrical member on the input member and two cylindrical members on the output shaft. A slip ring configuration on the output member is provided to permit the introduction of electrical energy to a coil assembly disposed on the output member, which coil is energized to establish a magnetic field in the working gap, thereby energizing the magnetorheological fluid. Wiper structures on the input and output members prevent the accumulation and/or centrifugal packing of the iron particles in the magnetorheological fluid adjacent the axial ends of the cylindrical members. A cavity for excess magnetorheological fluid or fluid draining from the working gap is provided between opposed members of the output member. One of the opposed members has an angular wall portion diverging toward the working gap to direct fluid into the working gap when the output member is rotating. The input member includes a finned hub portion rotatably disposed in the cavity to assist in heat transfer from the magnetorheological fluid during clutch operation. A bearing member isolated from the cavity supports the output member on the input member.

The fan drive includes an input member rotating at an input speed, and an output member attached to the fan and rotating at a fan speed, with a viscous fluid disposed therebetween. The fluid selectively transmits torque between the input member and the output member such that the fan speed is a function of a controllable parameter of the fluid. The parameter is continually controlled by a programmed controller. The method includes the steps of pre-determining a threshold temperature for the fan drive, with the threshold temperature approaching a maximum desirable temperature for the fan drive, and adjusting the fan speed as necessary to maintain a fan drive temperature below the threshold temperature. The controller may regulate fluid volume or fluid viscosity, or any other controllable parameter of the fluid.

A launch and disconnect clutch for the electric motor of a P2 hybrid powertrain is compact and provides improved operation. The clutch is mounted between the engine and transmission in the space formerly occupied by the torque converter. The clutch assembly is configured so that actuation, compensation and cooling are provided by only two oil channels. The clutch utilizes single-sided reaction plates which achieve high clutch gain thereby providing high torque capacity under electric operation and improved launch shudder characteristics.
