    摘要: The present invention relates to a method for fabricating ultra-thin films of pyrolytic carbon. Pyrolytic carbon is vapor deposited onto a concave surface of a heated substrate to a total uniform thickness in the range of about 0.1 to 1.0 micrometer. The carbon film on the substrate is provided with a layer of adherent polymeric resin. The resulting composite film of pyrolytic carbon and polymeric resin is then easily separated from the substrate by shrinking the polymeric resin coating with thermally induced forces.

    摘要: A lid for gondola cars or the like comprises a rectangular frame approximating in geometry and size the open top of a gondola car and supporting therein a plurality of lightweight panels. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the lightweight panels are made of a polymer foam sandwiched between sheets of light gauge steel. The lid is retained on the gondola car by a plurality of spaced ratchet binders and includes a pair of spaced tripod straps attached thereto, wherein the lid may be conveniently lifted from and replaced on existing gondola cars. The lid has a weight of approximately twelve hundred pounds.

    摘要: Transuranic waste generated at Department of Energy operations have been packaged to a large extent in unvented fifty-five gallon steel drums and have been stored with the intention of future retrieval. There are safety concerns regarding these drums because of a potential presence of hydrogen and methane generated by radiolysis of hydrogenous wastes and/or of traces of combustible volatile organic compounds contained in original waste materials. Methods and apparatus are provided for penetrating the packed drums and drum liner lids and for sampling and analyzing headspace gases as well as for purging undesirable gas mixtures and installing high efficiency particulate air filter vents. The steps of the method are performed by automated apparatus which is configured to isolate the drums having contents being tested from the surrounding environment and for inserting vents with filters concurrently with performing the tests.

    摘要: A filtered vent useful for venting drums, such as 55-gallon drums, includes a cylindrical housing having an anular activated carbon filter cartridge disposed therein. The cylindrical housing has a threaded collar with vents at one end and a pressure relief valve at the other end. The pressure relief valve is connected to a J-shaped tube which has an open end positioned proximate the threaded collar. An annular filter is disposed in the housing, the annular filter has an inner surface in communication with an inlet connected to the pressure relief valve and an outer surface in communication with the vents in the threaded collar. Volatile liquid in the air space between the top wall of the container and the top surface of the liquid passes through the activated carbon filter before venting into the atmosphere. If nesessary or desired, a HEPA filter may be disposed upstream of the activated carbon filter and a GORTEX.TM. film may be placed over the open end of the tube in order to protect the activated carbon filter from becoming contaminated with radioactive particulates or becoming degraded by the liquid.
