Novel optical waveguides and methods for their fabrication are provided. The waveguides are made from polydiacetylene materials. The waveguides are made by a bilayer process wherein a film made from a soluble polydiacetylene material is applied to a substrate and a silicon-containing imaging layer is applied atop the polyacetylene layer. Thereafter a pattern is produced in the imaging layer, for example, by photolithographic methods, and the pattern is transferred to the underlying polydiacetylene layer by exposure to an oxygen plasma. Polydiacetylene waveguides greater than 0.4 microns thickness are thereby produced.

Provided is a composite material comprising a carrier, a conductive layer formed on the carrier, and a dielectric layer containing spacer particles formed on the conductive layer. The dielectric layer has an abrasion factor less than about 0.3 determined by a brass shim abrasion method, and a substantially uniform distribution of spacer particles substantially free of flat spots greater than about 100 microns in the x-y direction and 1500 square microns in area on any part of the surface. The spacer particles of the dielectric layer of the composite material preferably are amorphous silica. The composite material is useful in electrostatic imaging technology and provides images substantially free of defects, including artifacts or flares, dropouts and nib writing.Also provided is a process which permits the creation of very stable dispersions of solid particles in a dispersing medium useful for both the dielectric and conductive layers of the composite material of the invention.A white or colored conductive ground plane is also provided.

Provided is an electrographic printing paper suitable for the printing of a quality image, which printing paper is pastable and is therefore useful in pastable displays, including outdoor billboards. The electrographic printing paper is comprised of a dielectric coating on a conductive base paper which exhibits wet strength and wet expansion properties suitable for pasted displays. The conductive base paper contains a wet strength agent and a sizing or coating of a conductivizing composition comprised of a binder and a substantially water insoluble conductivizing agent.
