摘要: A drill bit has a plurality of cutters secured to the bit body, including a gauge cutter defining a gauge diameter of the drill bit. A reciprocating gauge assembly on the bit comprises a cavity defined in the bit body, a piston reciprocably disposed in the cavity, a wear element on an outwardly facing end of the piston, a piston retainer for moveably retaining the piston in the cavity, and a spring biasing the piston outwardly to a neutral position of the wear element with respect to the gauge diameter. The wear element and piston may be urged inwardly in response to an applied load at the drill bit gauge pad, increasing the lateral depth of cut and thereby controlling the aggressiveness of the bit in response to the load.

摘要: A method includes acquiring an image of a cutter on a drill bit, determining a cutter dull condition based on the image of the cutter using a machine-learning method, wherein the machine-learning method is trained using a set of training images and a set of known cutter dull conditions, wherein each of the set of known cutter dull conditions is associated with one or more of a set of cutters depicted in the set of training images and determining a cutter degradation severity based the image of the cutter. The method also includes generating bit modification instructions based the cutter dull condition and the cutter degradation severity.

摘要: A shaped cutter is disclosed for use on a drill bit. In one or more example, the shaped cutter includes a substrate including a proximal end and a distal end and defining a cutter axis extending between the proximal and distal ends. A cutting table secured to the proximal end of the substrate includes a cutting face with a central boss axially extending from the cutting face and a plurality of ribs radially extending across the cutting face from the boss to a periphery of the cutting table. The cutting face may recede axially from the periphery towards the central boss, such as by defining a planar section, a plurality of intersecting planar sections, and/or a concave (e.g., frustoconical) shape between adjacent ribs.

摘要: The microstructure of braze joints in polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters may be tailored to increase the shear strength of the braze joint, for example, by increasing the amount of a dispersed particulate microstructure therein. A method for forming a dispersed particulate microstructure may include brazing a polycrystalline diamond table to a hard composite substrate with a braze alloy at a braze temperature between 5° C. above a solidus temperature of the braze alloy and 200° C. above a liquidus temperature of the braze alloy; and forming a braze joint between the polycrystalline diamond table and the hard composite substrate that comprises at least 40% by volume of the dispersed particulate microstructure composed of a particulate inter-metallic phase having a diameter of 0.5 μm to 2.0 μm and an aspect ratio of 1 to 5 dispersed in a ductile matrix.

摘要: A mold transfer assembly includes a transfer housing providing an interior defined by one or more sidewalls and a top. The transfer housing is sized to receive and encapsulate a mold as the mold is moved between a furnace and a thermal heat sink. An arm is coupled to the transfer housing to move the transfer housing and the mold encapsulated within the transfer housing between the furnace and a thermal heat sink. The transfer housing exhibits one or more thermal properties to control a thermal profile of the mold.
