The yarn (30) is illuminated with an intensity dependent upon the thickness of the yarn (30) and is photographed by the camera (5). The photographed image is digitalized in the computer with the image processing program and low-contrast points are filtered out. The remaining points are gathered together into coherent areas the sizes of which are classified into predetermined size classes and are stored.

The invention relates to an open-end rotor-spinning device with a rotor shaft which is mounted and driven in the wedge-shaped gap between supporting disks and to the free end of which is assigned an axial bearing. A simplified mounting, which also allows the supporting disks to be removed and exchanged while the machine is in operation, is provided because the rotor shaft (1) is mounted at two bearing points, of which one is formed by supporting disks (2, 3) arranged in the vicinity of the spinning rotor (10) and the second is a bearing (5) which absorbs axial and radial forces and which receives the free end (11) of the rotor shaft (1). An increase in the operating speed of the spinning rotor (10) without an increase in the running speed of the drive means (6) is achieved as a result of a reduction of the diameter of the rotor shaft (1) in the region of the drive means.

A method and system for maintaining spinning machines having a plurality of spinning stations include automatically positioning a maintenance unit proximate to the spinning stations for removing spinning components from the spinning stations and replacing the removed spinning components with replacement spinning components. The maintenance unit is configured to remove the spinning component from the spinning station for servicing, to immediately replace the removed spinning component with a replacement spinning component which is carried by the maintenance unit, and to transfer the removed spinning component to a remote service station. The removed spinning component is serviced at the service station and is subsequently picked up by the maintenance unit for subsequent installation into another spinning station.

An open-end rotor spinning machine which operates at rotor speeds higher than 100,000 rpm is constructed so that the critical system rotational speed is higher than the 100,000 rpm operating rotational speed. The rotatable rotor has a shaft bearingly supported in the nip between at least two pairs of supporting disks. Each disk has a plastic outer covering around the circumferential surface thereof and preferably is provided with at least one recess along its circumference. An elastic support surface preferably covers the circumference of each disk and is disposed between the disk and its outer plastic covering. The interior distance between the disks is from 20 to 69 mm. A circumferential recess preferably is disposed in at least on of the lateral surfaces of the plastic covering of each supporting disk. An electric motor drives a drive pulley, and the two are mounted in a stationary mounting while a swivellable pillow block moves the shaft to press against the drive pulley for driving the shaft and rotating the rotor. The center of gravity of the spinning rotor is at a distance of from 15 to 28 mm in front of the closest of the two pairs of supporting disks to the rotor. The free end of the rotor bears against an axial bearing and extends from 5 to 30 mm beyond the pair of supporting disks farthest away from the rotor and in the direction of the axial bearing.

A thread draw-off nozzle projects into the spinning rotor and has a curved thread contact surface. The radius of curvature of the thread contact surface is between 7.5 and 8.5 mm. Such enables yarn to be produced with a rotor speed of between 50,000 and 70,000 revolutions per minute.

When a thread (10) supplied at a constant speed is wound onto a cross-wound bobbin (11), the variations in thread tension are compensated, and in addition predetermined thread-tension limiting values are prevented from being exceeded as a result of a change in the winding-on speed. A first regulating system (96) is provided for compensating periodic variations in the thread tension, while a second regulating system (51) is provided for compensating shifts in the range of thread tensions. The second regulating system is designed as a variable step-up gear (5), the drive part (60) of which is connected to a drive shaft (4) extending over several spooling stations. The output part (62) of this step-up gear (5) is connected to the spooling roller (3), the drive part (60) being connected to the output part (62) by means of a transmission member (61) which determines the gear ratio at any particular time and which is adjustable as a function of the thread tension. The drive part (60) and the output part (62 ) are both designed as cone wheels, between which the transmission member (61) is continuously adjustable. The transmission member (61) has assigned to it an adjustable basic position and a return device (89) for returning to a basic position determining the maximum step-up ratio.
