The invention relates to a process for rendering contact lenses hydrophilic, which comprises treating a contact lens with a compound of formula IAr--Z--Ar' (I)wherein Ar and Ar' are each independently of the other an aromatic radical that may be substituted by lower alkoxy and/or by lower alkyl and wherein one of the radicals Ar and Ar' or both radicals Ar and Ar' contain one or more substituents X selected independently of one another from a polar functional group Y, lower alkyl substituted by a polar functional group Y, and lower alkoxy substituted by a polar functional group Y, and wherein Z is a divalent group that separates Ar and Ar' from each other by from one to six atoms. The invention relates also to contact lenses treated according to the invention and to the use of compounds of formula I in the process according to the invention.

The material for immobilizing includes a hydrophobic, water insoluble substrate having a coating of a mixture of different amphiphilic lipoid compounds thereon. The lipoid compounds are oriented so that the hydrophilic portions are distal to the substrate and free to bond with water soluble proteins and carbohydrates.

The invention relates to a wet chemical method for the surface modification of products made of low-energy synthetic fibers, to the products produced by the method and to the use of the products produced by the method. The material surface is permanently provided with functional groups by contact with an aqueous polyvinylalcohol solution containing silanol(ate) groups. Depending upon the design, the materials have a high water consumption or transmission capacity or exhibit a capillary activity. The range of uses for surface-modified materials is extended by the possibility of reacting the functional groups, inter alia, with biologically active components.

A procedure is described for wet chemical surface modification of formed articles and substrates coated with made of organopolysiloxanes: the articles formed were contacted with metal hydroxide solutions to tailor the binding capacity for ions, particularly metal ions, bivalent cations, organic macro anions, and organic macro cations, e.g. proteins. The procedure creates organopolysiloxane surfaces which are better wettable, have reduced surface resistance, are less sticky, are smoother and more biocompatible.
