The invention relates to a wet chemical method for the surface modification of products made of low-energy synthetic fibers, to the products produced by the method and to the use of the products produced by the method. The material surface is permanently provided with functional groups by contact with an aqueous polyvinylalcohol solution containing silanol(ate) groups. Depending upon the design, the materials have a high water consumption or transmission capacity or exhibit a capillary activity. The range of uses for surface-modified materials is extended by the possibility of reacting the functional groups, inter alia, with biologically active components.

Provided are amphiphobic block copolymers, methods for preparing amphiphobic block copolymers, and applications thereof. Amphiphobic block copolymers can be used to prepare amphiphobic coatings on material surfaces, such as glass, printing paper or fabric. Amphiphobic block copolymers can also be used to coat particles, e.g., silica nanoparticles, which are then used to coat material surfaces. Such coated particles and uses thereof are also provided herein.

There is provided a surface treatment agent which comprises a fluoropolymer having repeating units derived from a fluorine-containing monomer of the formula: wherein (a) the fluoropolymer contains a silicon atom, and/or (b) the surface treatment agent contains a fluorine-free polymer which is different from the fluoropolymer and which is a silicon-containing polymer. The surface treatment agent imparts excellent water- and oil-repellency and soil resistance to textiles while retaining the feeling of the textiles, even if the surface treatment agent contains a fluorine-containing acrylate polymer substituted at its α-position by a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom or the like.

The present invention relates to a porous web comprising a plurality of structural elements with interstitial spaces therebetween, wherein at least some of the structural elements of the top and bottom surfaces of the web are encapsulated by a cured, shear thinned polymer composition and most of the interstitial spaces are open. The invention also relates to a porous web having a substantially continuous region of a cured, shear thinned polymer composition extending through the web so that the polymer composition fills the interstitial spaces and adheres adjacent structural elements of the web in the region. In the areas of the web above and below the filled region, at least some of the structural elements are encapsulated and most of the interstitial spaces are open.
