A glass preform for use in the fabrication of a dispersion shifted single mode optical fiber is produced by a method for comprising steps of inserting a core member consisting of an inner core part made of a germanium-added quartz glass which optionally contains fluorine and an outer core part made of a quartz glass having a refractive index smaller than that of the inner core part in a glass tube made of a fluorine-added quartz glass having a refractive index smaller than that of the outer core part, heating the core member and the glass tube to collapse the glass tube and fuse them together to produce a glass perform. The glass preform comprises a core member consisting of an inner core part made of GeO.sub.2 -SiO.sub.2 glass or GeO.sub.2 -F-SiO.sub.2 glass and an outer core part made of F-SiO.sub.2 glass and a cladding made of F-SiO.sub.2 glass and provides a dispersion shifted single mode optical fiber having reduced attenuation of light transmission in the 1.5 .mu.m wavelength band.

A control circuit detects each power of signal light components demultiplexed by an optical coupler and controls the power of optical pumping light to be supplied to an optical amplification section from an optical pumping light sources such that the power of output signal light has a predetermined target value. The control circuit also controls the gradient dL/dλ of the optical filter on the basis of powers of the signal light components.

This invention relates to an optical fiber amplifier for amplifying and outputting input signal light. The optical fiber amplifier includes first to third amplification optical fibers. The first to third optical fibers are arranged such that the signal light passes through the first to third optical fibers in the order named. A first value as the (emission cross-section)/(absorption cross-section) of the first optical fiber and a third value as the (emission cross-section)/(absorption cross-section) of the third optical fiber are set to be larger than a second value as the (emission cross-section)/(absorption cross-section) of the second optical fiber. With this arrangement, low noise can be achieved in the first optical fiber, and a large output can be achieved in the third optical fiber. In addition, the gain characteristics associated with wavelength in this optical fiber amplifier as the overall transmission line including the first, second, and third amplification optical fibers can be sufficiently flattened.

An optical amplifier for amplifying optical signals transmitted in a first direction is coupled to first and second pieces of the first optical fiber. A second optical fiber is coupled to the first and second pieces, bypasses the optical amplifier and transmits optical signals in a second direction opposite to the first direction. A first optical signal generator apparatus coupled to the first piece of the first optical fiber provides optical signals propagating in the first direction to a optical receiver apparatus coupled to the second piece of the first optical fiber. A second optical signal generator in the optical receiver apparatus provides optical signals propagating in the second direction to the first optical signal generator apparatus. A second optical receiver and a monitor, both in the first optical signal generator apparatus, receive the optical signals propagating in the second direction and monitor various operating conditions of the optical communication system.
