摘要: Various embodiments of the present invention relate generally to systems for performing Raman spectroscopy. In one embodiment, a system for performing Raman spectroscopy comprises an analyte holder having a surface configured to retain an analyte and a light concentrator configured to receive an incident beam of light, split the incident beam into one or more beams, and direct the one or more beams to substantially intersect at the surface. The system may also include a collector configured to focus each of the one or more beams onto the surface, collect the Raman scattered light emitted from the analyte, and direct the Raman scattered light away from the surface.

摘要: A deformable optical element includes an elastically deformable lens. Electrical contacts are directly attached to the elastically deformable lens and configured to receive an applied voltage. The electrical contacts have opposing surfaces configured to develop electrostatic forces in response to the applied voltage. 摘要: A fast injection optical switch is disclosed. The optical switch includes a thyristor having a plurality of layers including an outer doped layer and a switching layer. An area of the thyristor is configured to receive a light beam to be directed through at least one of the plurality of layers and exit the thyristor at a predetermined angle. At least two electrodes are coupled to the thyristor and configured to enable a voltage to be applied to facilitate carriers from the outer doped layer to be directed to the switching layer. Sufficient carriers can be directed to the switching layer to provide a change in refractive index of the switching layer to redirect at least a portion of the light beam to exit the thyristor at a deflection angle different from the predetermined angle.

摘要: Embodiments of the present invention are related to nanowire-based devices that can be configured and operated as modulators, chemical sensors, and light-detection devices. In one aspect, a nanowire-based device includes a reflective member, a resonant cavity surrounded by at least a portion of the reflective member, and at least one nanowire disposed within the resonant cavity. The nanowire includes at least one active segment selectively disposed along the length of the nanowire to substantially coincide with at least one antinode of light resonating within the cavity. The active segment can be configured to interact with the light resonating within the cavity.

摘要: Embodiments of the present invention are related to nanowire-based devices that can be configured and operated as modulators, chemical sensors, and light-detection devices. In one aspect, a nanowire-based device includes a reflective member, a resonant cavity surrounded by at least a portion of the reflective member, and at least one nanowire disposed within the resonant cavity. The nanowire includes at least one active segment selectively disposed along the length of the nanowire to substantially coincide with at least one antinode of light resonating within the cavity. The active segment can be configured to interact with the light resonating within the cavity.

摘要: An optical modulator includes a confinement region of semiconductor material defining at least a portion of a light path through the optical modulator. The optical modulator also includes electrical contacts for connection with a voltage source for injecting carriers into the confinement region. The injected carriers impede light propagating through the confinement region, to thereby modulate light intensity. Contact regions in electrical contact with the confinement region remove injected carriers from the confinement region. Methods of modulating light and of making the optical modulator are also disclosed.

摘要: Raman systems include a radiation source, a radiation detector, and a Raman device or signal-enhancing structure. Raman devices include a tunable resonant cavity and a Raman signal-enhancing structure coupled to the cavity. The cavity includes a first reflective member, a second reflective member, and an electro-optic material disposed between the reflective members. The electro-optic material exhibits a refractive index that varies in response to an applied electrical field. Raman signal-enhancing structures include a substantially planar layer of Raman signal-enhancing material having a major surface, a support structure extending from the major surface, and a substantially planar member comprising a Raman signal-enhancing material disposed on an end of the support structure opposite the layer of Raman signal-enhancing material. The support structure separates at least a portion of the planar member from the layer of Raman signal-enhancing material by a selected distance of less than about fifty nanometers.
