The liquid layer consists of a metal or a metal alloy, such as Ga or a Ga alloy, whose vapor pressure at 300.degree. C. is below 10.sup.-5 N/m.sup.2, and which does not attack the supporting faces to any substantial extent. The tube has a long life, produces little noise during operation, and is of relatively simple construction.

The material flow is shut off during this operation, and in a second position of the shutter 5 the material flow begins. The spindle 11 is provided with a permanent magnet 57 having pole shoes 61, 63 which are held against stops 109, 115 of a magnetic yoke 99 in the first position under the influence of the magnetic field of the magnet 57, and which are held against stops 111, 113 of the yoke 99 in the second position. The yoke 99 is provided with an electric coil 121. The shutter 5 is displaceable from a rest position to one of the two positions by an alternating current in the coil 121, whereas a direct current in the coil 121 attenuates the magnetic field of the magnet 57, so that the shutter 5 is displaced from the relevant position to the other position under the influence of the torsion spring 33. The device is suitable for use in a system for the deposition of materials in the form of thin layers on substrates. In such a system, the shutter 5 periodically interrupts a material flow coming from a source of material and aimed at the substrate, so that a desired composition of the layer is obtained.

The housing forms a cartridge accommodating the information disc, the electrical drive unit and the scanning unit. The information disc is disposed in a plane intersecting the electrical drive unit and the scanning unit is situated between the information disc and one of the main walls.

A magnetic head (52-55) is arranged on a pivotable support (56-59), and a lifting device lifts the magnetic head from the information disc. The lifting device comprises an electromagnetic actuator (62-65) having a first actuator part which is stationary relative to the frame and a second actuator part arranged on a movable portion (56b-59b) of the support. When the actuator is energized these actuator parts cooperate with one another via an air gap to generate a lifting force. Such an energization is effected particularly when a scanning operation is started and stopped, in order to preclude damaging of the information disc. Energization requires a comparatively small amount of energy and the measure has a favorable effect on the required starting torque.
