One of the prism arrays is an array of birefringent prisms. The present invention also provides a polarization conversion system having a polarization separation element of the above type for directing light having a first polarization in a first direction and for directing light having a second polarization different from the first polarization in a second direction different from the first direction; and one or more polarization conversion elements for converting light having the first and second polarizations to light having a substantially common output polarization. The polarization conversion system of the invention is suitable for use in a projection display system.

An optical device which is suitable for use in a projection display comprises a spatial light modulator, such as a liquid crystal device, with a microlens array disposed on its front surface. The microlenses are of convergent type, such as lenticules. The spatial light modulator is of the reflective type and comprises a plurality of rear reflectors, each of which has convergent optical power in at least one direction. The reflectors are arranged such that, for a given direction of illumination, each reflector forms an image of the aperture A of a microlens on the aperture B of another microlens or at a different position on the same microlens. When used in, for example, a projection display, light losses caused by vignetting are reduced.

The reflective liquid crystal display device further includes a holographic field lens (67). By providing the holographic field lens, the LCD can be used with a closely placed, offset light source (41), since the holographic field lens simultaneously concentrates light incident on the LCD and redirects it in a preferred direction. Disclosed is an optical valve or light valve for providing large area collimated illumination from localized light sources, and system and method thereof for 2D, 3D, and/or autosteroscopic displays. An optical valve may include a stepped structure, in which the steps include separated extraction features which may be optically hidden to light propagating in a first direction. Light propagating in a second direction may be refracted, diffracted, or reflected by the features to provide illumination beams exiting from the top surface of the optical valve. Such controlled illumination may provide for efficient, multi-user autostereoscopic displays as well as improved 2D display functionality.

Manufacture of a birefringent liquid crystal cell is performed as follows. A layer of isotropic material having an outer surface which is shaped with a surface relief structure and is provided with a liquid crystal alignment property is formed. A flexible sheet having an outer surface provided with a liquid crystal alignment property is formed. A curable birefringent liquid crystal material is applied to one or both of the layer of isotropic material and the flexible sheet. The flexible sheet is applied over the layer of isotropic material with the outer surfaces of the layer of isotropic material and the flexible sheet facing one another with the liquid crystal material therebetween, thereby to form a liquid crystal cell. The liquid crystal material is cured and the flexible sheet is removed from the liquid crystal cell.

A birefringent lens structure comprises a birefringent lens array capable of directing light of a given polarisation into a directional distribution, the birefringent lens comprising a solid birefringent material and an isotropic material having an interface having a refractive structure. A switchable liquid crystal layer capable of rotating the polarisation of light passing therethrough is arranged adjacent the first birefringent material. The interface between the birefringent material and the liquid crystal layer has an alignment microstructure providing alignment of the birefringent material and the liquid crystal layer. A pair of electrodes for applying an electric field to switch the liquid crystal are arranged with both the lens array and the switchable liquid crystal layer therebetween and a conductive material is incorporated in the lens array to reduce the voltage drop across the lens array. To reduce reflection, the interface between the birefringent material and the isotropic material has an interface having alignment microstructure providing alignment of the birefringent material, and the refractive index of the isotropic material is substantially equal to the extraordinary refractive index of the birefringent material.
