摘要: Disclosed is an optical valve or light valve for providing large area collimated illumination from localized light sources, and system and method thereof for 2D, 3D, and/or autosteroscopic displays. An optical valve may include a stepped structure, in which the steps include separated extraction features which may be optically hidden to light propagating in a first direction. Light propagating in a second direction may be refracted, diffracted, or reflected by the features to provide illumination beams exiting from the top surface of the optical valve. Such controlled illumination may provide for efficient, multi-user autostereoscopic displays as well as improved 2D display functionality.

摘要: A display apparatus comprises a spatial light modulator and optical elements in series therewith. The optical elements provide a first parallax element being a parallax barrier capable of directing light output from the display apparatus into a first plurality of viewing windows, and a second parallax element capable of directing light output from the display apparatus into a second plurality of viewing windows. In a first mode, the first and second parallax elements have substantially no directional effect on the light output from the display apparatus. In a second mode, the first parallax element directs light output from the display apparatus into the first plurality of viewing windows and the second optical element has substantially no directional effect. In a third mode, the second optical element directs light output from the display apparatus into the second plurality of viewing windows and the first parallax element has substantially no directional effect.

摘要: Manufacture of a birefringent liquid crystal cell is performed as follows. A layer of isotropic material having an outer surface which is shaped with a surface relief structure and is provided with a liquid crystal alignment property is formed. A flexible sheet having an outer surface provided with a liquid crystal alignment property is formed. A curable birefringent liquid crystal material is applied to one or both of the layer of isotropic material and the flexible sheet. The flexible sheet is applied over the layer of isotropic material with the outer surfaces of the layer of isotropic material and the flexible sheet facing one another with the liquid crystal material therebetween, thereby to form a liquid crystal cell. The liquid crystal material is cured and the flexible sheet is removed from the liquid crystal cell.

摘要: A birefringent lens structure comprises a birefringent lens array capable of directing light of a given polarisation into a directional distribution, the birefringent lens comprising a solid birefringent material and an isotropic material having an interface having a refractive structure. A switchable liquid crystal layer capable of rotating the polarisation of light passing therethrough is arranged adjacent the first birefringent material. The interface between the birefringent material and the liquid crystal layer has an alignment microstructure providing alignment of the birefringent material and the liquid crystal layer. A pair of electrodes for applying an electric field to switch the liquid crystal are arranged with both the lens array and the switchable liquid crystal layer therebetween and a conductive material is incorporated in the lens array to reduce the voltage drop across the lens array. To reduce reflection, the interface between the birefringent material and the isotropic material has an interface having alignment microstructure providing alignment of the birefringent material, and the refractive index of the isotropic material is substantially equal to the extraordinary refractive index of the birefringent material.

摘要: A parallax barrier includes a polarisation modifying layer having aperture regions, for supplying light of a second polarisation when receiving light of a first polarisation, separated by barrier regions, for supplying light of a third polarisation different from the second polarisation when receiving light of the first polarisation, and a polariser selectively operable in a first mode and a second mode. At least one of the aperture regions and the barrier regions alters the polarisation of light passing therethrough. The polariser passes light of the second polarisation and blocks light of the third polarisation in the first mode and passes light of the third polarisation in the second mode.

摘要: An autostereoscopic display apparatus includes a spatial light modulator in which alignment features such as bump features provide radially symmetric alignment of the molecules of the liquid crystal. A parallax element is arranged over the spatial light modulator to direct light from the pixels into different viewing windows. The apertures of the pixels are shaped such that, for each individual row of pixels, a notional line parallel to the geometric axes of the parallax elements has a total length of intersection with the pixels of the row, weighted for the intensity of light modulated by the alignment features, which is the same for all positions of the notional line. This improves angular intensity uniformity. The pixels may each include plural apertures, wherein the alignment features of the apertures of each individual pixel are offset from one another in a direction perpendicular to said geometric axes. This improves angular contrast uniformity.
