An apparatus and method for controlling recording and reproduction in a video cassette tape recorder are disclosed apparatus is capable of, in a recording mode, separating specific data for speed-varied reproduction from compressed digital video signals, recording them on designated tracks, recording position information of the designated tracks on a control track by an index head or recording position information of recording position-synchronized blocks at the starting portions of the designated tracks recorded with the specific data, and in a speed-varied reproduction mode, controlling a capstan servo speed so as to maintain the travel of a magnetic tape at a normal speed and periodically or non-periodically accelerate or decelerate it where specific data for varied-speed have been recorded periodically or non-periodically on predetermined portions of tracks, thereby making heads travel repeatedly at the normal speed and the high speed and thereby detect continuously the specific tracks for varied-speed. A repeatability of reproduced video at a varied speed is obtained without any deterioration in picture quality, because of recording of the specific data for speed-varied reproduction and the continuous detection of the specific data in the speed-varied reproduction.

A method for and an apparatus for correcting errors of compressed digital data, using a dual decoding system for correcting errors generated at the data by adding parity bits having an error correction capability for K symbols to the data fields of the data. Errors of up to K are corrected by the C.sub.1 field- and C.sub.2 field-decodings. After the error correction, a determination is made about the presence of errors in the corrected data so that an erroneous detection and an erroneous correction of errors are prevented, thereby minimizing an influence by an error propagation generated upon the extension of compressed data. The present invention achieves an improvement in error correcting capability for compressed digital image data.

A signal characteristic variation apparatus for a high definition VCR in which a characteristic of a video signal is varied according to characteristics of a tape and a channel. A predetermined frequency band of test signal is recorded on the tape for recording the tape and channel characteristics in a recording mode. This enables the video signal to be recorded on the tape in the proper mode and permits, in the play-back mode, the tape and channel characteristics to be discriminated by detecting the test signal recorded on the tape. Therefore, the video signal can be played back from the tape with its frequency characteristic properly adjusted according to the discriminated tape and channel characteristics.

This invention relates to a device for correct converting of continuously reproduced serial data to original parallel data by detecting a synchronous signal, including a shift register for delaying serial data by a number of bits of a synchronous signal pattern in accordance with a serial clock, the serial data being reproduced from a magnetic recording medium, a detector for detecting a synchronous signal from an output signal of the shift register, a system controller for generating a predetermined bits interval of a parallel load signal and a parallel clock signal from the synchronous signal in accordance with the serial clock, a parallel shift register for converting the output signal of the shift register to a predetermined bits interval of parallel data in accordance with the parallel load signal, and counter part for counting the parallel clock signal to generate window signals detecting the synchronous signal in a certain period when the detector detects the synchronous signal.
