A packet-based, hierarchical communication system, arranged in a spanning tree configuration, is described in which wired and wireless communication networks exhibiting substantially different characteristics are employed in an overall scheme to link portable or mobile computing devices. The network accommodates real time voice transmission both through dedicated, scheduled bandwidth and through a packet-based routing within the confines and constraints of a data network. Conversion and call processing circuitry is also disclosed which enables access devices and personal computers to adapt voice information between analog voice stream and digital voice packet formats as proves necessary. Routing pathways include wireless spanning tree networks, wide area networks, telephone switching networks, internet, etc., in a manner virtually transparent to the user. A voice session and associate call setup simulates that of conventional telephone switching network, providing well-understood functionality common to any mobile, remote or stationary terminal, phone, computer, etc.

A premises based wireless network includes a plurality of interconnected wireless access points. Each of the plurality of wireless access points provides wireless communications within a corresponding cell of a plurality of cells and is spaced to provide wireless coverage throughout the premises. The size of at least one cell of the plurality of cells is adjustable based upon cell communication characteristics. In order to adjust the size of a cell, the corresponding operating data rate is selectively adjusted. In particular, the size of the cell is increased by reducing the data rate or throughput capability. For example, at least one wireless access point may operate according to an industry standard protocol at a standard data rate with a relatively smaller cell size, and another may operate according to a proprietary protocol. A dual mode base station of the plurality of base stations may operate according to both the industry standard protocol and the proprietary protocol. At least one of the plurality of wireless access points may be selectively disabled, whereas another have its data rate to increase a corresponding cell size. In the network, a selectively disabled base station monitors communications within a previously active corresponding cell. Based upon the monitored communications, the selectively disabled base station becomes active to provide wireless communications within a corresponding cell.

A system and method of provisioning a wireless link for a wireless scanner is provided. Embodiments of the present invention operate in accordance with a primary wireless device adapted to generate security data at the beginning of a session, an output device electrically connected to the primary wireless device, and a secondary wireless device adapted to communicate with the primary wireless device over a wireless link. In one embodiment of the present invention, the primary wireless device includes a provisioning application connected to a first wireless device and adapted to (i) generate security data at the beginning of a session, (ii) provide the security data to the first wireless device, and (iiii) provide the security data to the output device. In alternate embodiments of the present invention, the provisioning application is further adapted to (i) store the security data in a memory device, (ii) provide instructional information to the output device, and/or (ii) generate a barcode(s) that includes the security data, at least one provisioning command, and/or additional data. In another embodiment of the present invention, the second wireless device includes a scanning application connected to a second wireless device and adapted to (i) acquire the security data from the output device, (ii) identify the security data as being applicable to the second wireless device, and (iii) provide the security data to the second wireless device. In an alternate embodiment of the present invention, the scanning application is further adapted to store the security data in a memory device.

A low power wireless communication (personal LAN) system includes a plurality of wireless devices with each wireless device including a radio transceiver. The radio transceiver may take the form of an insertable card that fits within a slot in the wireless device. The plurality of wireless devices establishes a wireless network with at least two of the plurality of wireless devices share beaconing responsibilities to coordinate operation of the wireless network. The beaconing responsibilities may be shared on a round robin basis or may be shared according to the operating characteristics of the wireless devices with some wireless devices assuming greater beaconing responsibilities than other of the wireless devices. One of the plurality of wireless devices may separate from the wireless network to become a separated wireless device. In such case, at least one of the wireless devices attempts to reestablish communications with the separated wireless device. Further, the separated wireless device may also attempt to reestablish communication with the wireless network. At least two of the wireless devices may separate from the wireless network to form an alternate wireless network separate from the wireless network. In such case, the at least two wireless devices of the alternate network may rejoin the wireless network after the separation. The wireless devices may establish the wireless network when proximate to one another and operating at a lower power level while continuing operation at a higher power level. The wireless devices establish the wireless network when in a first proximity to one another and continue to communicate while in a second proximity to one another.
