    摘要: Syndiotactic polypropylene blends having a unique set of mechanical properties may be prepared by blending syndiotactic polypropylene with an ultra low density polyethylene and, optionally, an isotactic polypropylene random copolymer. The syndiotactic polypropylene blends of the present invention have been found to have improved impact strength, reduced haze, increased light transmittance, and reduced flexural modulus. It has been determined that the addition of about 10 to about 50 wt % of an ultra low density polyethylene plastomer to a syndiotactic polypropylene can greatly enhance mechanical toughness, particularly at low temperatures, while maintaining good optical clarity. These results are made possible by using a sPP material with good optical clarity and dispersing the ULDPE plastomer uniformly throughout the sPP matrix to act as a sort of impact modifier. Moreover, the addition of about 10 to about 50 wt % of an iPP random copolymer to the sPP matrix phase provides comparable or improved mechanical properties while also resulting in a significant reduction in injection molding cycle times. The syndiotactic polypropylene blends according to the present invention may be further processed according to accepted practices to make cast films, blown films, co-extruded films, laminated sheets, injection molded parts, blow molded containers, and other articles using basic plastic fabrication techniques as known in the art.

    摘要: A mono-axially oriented polypropylene film with sodium benzoate as a nucleating agent results in reduced shrinkage and increase stretchability. The sodium benzoate ranges up to 1000 ppm. The polypropylene used in making the film preferably has an isotacticity exceeding 97% as determined by C.sup.13 -NMR spectroscopy. The film preferably has a thicknesses of about 0.5 mil to 5.0 mil and, more preferably, about 1.0 mil to 3.0 mil. The sodium benzoate preferably has a purity of 99% and a particle size of from about 1 micron to about 3 microns.

    摘要: A process for producing high impact polystyrene including feeding at least one vinyl aromatic monomer, an elastomer, and a free radical initiator to a first linear flow reactor to form a reaction mixture. Polymerizing the reaction mixture in the first linear flow reactor to a point below the point at which phase inversion occurs to produce a first polymerization mixture and feeding the first polymerization mixture from the first linear flow reactor to a second linear flow reactor. Polymerizing the reaction mixture in the second linear flow reactor to at least a phase inversion point of the mixture to produce a second polymerization mixture and feeding the second polymerization mixture from the second linear flow reactor to at least a third linear flow reactor for post-inversion polymerization of the second polymerization mixture. The product stream can have an ESCR value of at least 10% toughness retained with less than 10 wt % rubber content.

    摘要: A polymer blend and a method of making the same are provided. The polymer blend includes an ethylene-propylene (C2-C3) random copolymer and a modifier selected from the group consisting of a metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene-based copolymer, a metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene-based terpolymer, and a syndiotactic polypropylene homopolymer. The polymer blend may also include an organic peroxide for visbreaking the polymer blend. An end use article is made from the foregoing polymer blend. The end use article may be, for example, a film, an injection molded article, a compression molded article, a thermoformed article, and a fiber. The end use article is desirably a film having an Elmendorf tear strength of at least about 300 g/ply in the machine and transverse directions.
