Abstract:
Coating compositions comprising a polymeric polyol with a polyester crosslinking agent having at least two beta-alkoxyester groups per molecule are disclosed. The compositions, when applied to a substrate and cured in the presence of a transesterification catalyst, give solvent-resistant coatings.
Abstract:
A composition for passivating a metal substrate is provided. The composition is prepared by mixing together: a) Group IIIB or IVB metal compound; and b) a reaction product of an epoxy group-containing polymer or oligomer, a hydroxy functional acid and a dialkanolamine. The compositions, which are substantially free of chrome, are used to treat metal substrates prior to the application of a protective or decorative coating.
Abstract:
A cationic resin containing blocked isocyanate groups which is suitable for use in electrodeposition is disclosed. The cationic resin is derived from an epoxy resin and contains in the resin molecule cationic salt groups, active hydrogen groups and blocked isocyanate groups. The blocked isocyanate groups are incorporated into the resin molecule by reacting the epoxy resin with a compound selected from the class consisting of mercapto compounds and acid group-containing compounds where the compounds also contain blocked isocyanate groups. The resin can be formulated into an electrocoating composition which is free of lead and yet provides outstanding corrosion resistance when electrodeposited over steel substrates. The outstanding corrosion resistance can be attained when the substrate has not been given a chrome rinse which is conventional in pretreating the steel substrate before electrodeposition.
Abstract:
Coating compositions comprising a polymeric polyol with a polyester crosslinking agent having at least two gamma and/or delta-hydroxyester groups per molecule are disclosed. The compositions, when applied to a substrate and cured in the presence of a transesterification catalyst, give solvent-resistant coatings.

Coating compositions comprising a polymeric polyol with a polyester crosslinking agent having at least two beta-amido ester groups per molecule are disclosed. The compositions, when applied to a substrate and cured in the presence of a transesterification catalyst, give solvent-resistant coatings.
Abstract:
Stabilization of aqueous resinous dispersions containing a pigment of a divalent metal such as strontium chromate is disclosed. Stabilization is achieved by incorporating a chelating agent in the dispersion.
Abstract:
An electrodepositable composition is provided comprising: (A) a non-gelled cationic resin which is derived from a polyepoxide and which contains in the resin molecule cationic salt groups and active hydrogen groups selected from aliphatic hydroxyl and primary and secondary amino; and present as a separate component (B) a fully capped polyisocyanate curing agent containing substantially no free isocyanate groups. The electrodepositable composition contains from about 0.02 to 1.0 milliequivalents phenolic hydroxyl groups per gram of resin solids, and from about 0.1 to 2.0 milliequivalents beta-hydroxy ester groups per gram of resin solids. The composition provides excellent corrosion resistance when electrodeposited over steel substrates, and does not require lead in the formulation nor the use of a conventional chrome rinse for the steel substrate pretreatment before electrodeposition.
Abstract:
A curable composition, comprising a beta-hydroxy urethane which is particularly useful as a crosslinking agent which affords relatively low temperature cure, is provided.
Abstract:
An ungelled reaction product of a polyepoxide and an active hydrogen-containing material containing at least two active hydrogens per molecule is disclosed. The active hydrogen-containing material being a hydroxyalkyl-substituted urethane in which the hydroxy group is in the beta position to the urethane group. The reaction product is useful as a precursor in making cationic resins for use in cationic electrodeposition.
