Abstract: A DISPOSABLE WASHCLOTH HAVING UTILITY AS A FACECLOTH AND CHARACTERIZED BY A PLURALITY OF DESIRABLE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES FOR BODY WASHING INCLUDING A DEGREE OF SURFACE ROUGHNESS. THE ROUGHNESS IS OCCASIONED BY A STRUCTURE WHICH INCLUDES A SCRIM HAVING CREPED THREADS BONDED OVER THEIR LENGTH BETWEEN AND TO CREPED CELLULOSE WADDING LAYERS; THE CREPED THREADS OF THE SCRIM CARRY A THERMOPLASTIC ADHESIVE AND IN THE PRODUCT SUCH ADHESIVE IS PRESENT TO SOME EXTENT IN THE WADDING LAYERS AS RELATIVELY RIGID NUGGETS, PROTUBERANCES OR THE LIKE AIDING IN CREPE RETENTION AND IMPARTING TO THE OUTER CELLULOSE LAYERS THE RUGOSITY OR ROUGHNESS DESIRED. THE PROCESS OF FORMATION INCLUDES HOT, AND PREFERABLY DRY, CREPING THE COMPOSITE OF CELLULOSE LAYERS AND ADHESIVELY TREATED SCRIM TO PROVIDE A FINE CREPE IN THE PRODUCT AS A WHOLE. THIS CREPE IS RETAINED BY THE SET THERMOPLASTIC ADHESIVE AT TEMPERATURES COMMON TO WASHCLOTH USE.

Abstract: Absorbent paper sheets in multi-ply web form in which the outer webs of the sheet are creped and consist of a series of ribs and grooves. The webs have their ribs secured together by adhesive dispersed in a pattern consisting of individual adhesive zones. The adhesive zones are obtained by providing in embossing apparatus cooperable rolls each having alternating ribs and grooves, the ribs of one roll being provided with protuberances and the other with recesses. The protuberances cover a relatively small area of the total rib area and carry a web on the protuberances through an adhesive applicator so that a relatively small area of the web receives adhesive for attachment to a second web.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of forming two or more embossments repeated continuously along the length of a flexible web and out of register with each other. The embossments are formed by passing the web through two or more embossing stations on the surface of a single embossing roll, and drawing the web away from the surface of the embossing roll between successive embossing stations. The flexible web may be made of cellulosic tissue or other substantially nonresilient material, and reinforced with resilient threads or other elements extending continuously in the longitudinal direction of the web so as to maintain a constant web length between pairs of successive embossing stations. The resulting product is also disclosed.

Abstract: A multi-ply absorbent creped cellulose wadding paper tissue material in which an elastically extensible inner web of creped tissue paper has on its major faces at least one embossed paper tissue material of greater dryer basis weight and lesser extensibility. The outer webs are bonded to the inner web (or webs) in spaced regions to provide unbonded zones between bonds. The adhesive is sufficiently water resistant to permit retention of the webs when wetted so that the inner creped web may expand and fill the unbonded zones providing good bulk in the wet product. Methods of effecting the web combinations are described.

Abstract: An improved heavy-duty wipe made of nonwoven materials, and a method of producing the same. The wipe includes a central layer of multi-ply cellulosic tissue, a web or sheet of open mesh nonwoven crossed threads on each side of the central layer, and a thin applique of fine fibrous material bonded to the outer surface of each crossed-thread web. The central layer of multiply cellulosic tissue is bonded to both the warp threads and fill threads on the warp thread side of each of the two webs of nonwoven material, and the fibrous appliques are bonded to the fill thread sides of each web.
