Abstract: A method of estimating a ventilation rate in a room, the method comprising receiving a signal indicative of a concentration of at least one Volatile organic compound (VOC(t)) inside the room; processing the signal to detect at least one increase from an initial level (VOC(t0)) of the concentration of the at least one volatile organic compound; detect a corresponding maximum level of the concentration from the initial level; detecting when the concentration of the volatile organic compound returns towards the initial level or a steady state level (VOCss) from the corresponding maximum level; and determining the ventilation rate (k) based on the rate at which the concentration of the at least one Volatile organic compound returns towards the initial level or the steady state level from the corresponding maximum level.

Abstract: A sleep monitoring system (100) including: at least one sensor (114) to sense physiological changes of a subject during a test period, the test period having a plurality of epochs, and being configured to form corresponding sensor information for the plurality of the epochs; at least one controller (120, 190, 194) to: receive the sensor information for the plurality of the epochs from each sensor; derive a hypnodensity profile for each epoch of the plurality of epochs based upon the received sensor information for the epochs; calculate at least one hypnodensity feature based upon the hypnodensity profile for each epoch of the plurality of epochs; determine a composite feature based on the at least one hypnodensity feature over the plurality of epochs; compare the composite feature to a at least one predetermined indicator related to sleep apnea; and determine a presence and/or severity of apnea based upon the comparison.
