Abstract: The invention relates to determining a representation of cardiac output in a patient. Provided are a method and a system for monitoring a cardiac output using a single device inserted into a Central Venous Catheter (CVC) or Peripheral Inserted Central Catheters (PICC) line. In an embodiment, the device contains an elongated body that fits the lumen of a Central Venous Cava or Peripheral Inserted Central Catheters line and has an ultrasound transducer at the tip. By operating the device such that the velocity in both the Superior Vena Cava and Inferior Vena Cava can be sampled continuously the CO is monitored.

Abstract: Devices, systems and methods for pulse wave velocity determination in a renal artery are disclosed. An intravascular system may be included with two or more sensors disposed a certain distance apart on a flexible, elongate member. The sensors may be configured to receive pressure measurements associated with pulse waves moving through the renal artery, at different times. This difference in time and the distance between the 5 sensors may be used to calculate pulse wave velocity.

Abstract: Devices, systems and methods for pulse wave velocity determination in a renal artery are disclosed. An intravascular system may be included with two or more sensors disposed a certain distance apart on a flexible, elongate member. The sensors may be configured to measure changes in measurement value of the renal artery, such as the diameter of the renal artery and/or a distance between the sensors and the vessel walls, with pulse waves moving through the renal arter. The difference in the time at which the sensors measure these changes and the distance between the sensors may be used to calculate pulse wave velocity.

Abstract: Devices, systems, and methods for pulse wave velocity determination are disclosed. The apparatus includes an intravascular device that can be positioned within a vessel. The intravascular device includes a flexible elongate member having a proximal portion and a distal portion. A pressure sensor can be coupled to the distal portion of the flexible elongate member. The pressure sensor can monitor pressure within the vessel. At least one imaging element can be coupled to the distal portion of the flexible elongate member. The imaging element can monitor the wall thickness of the vessel. A processing system in communication with the intravascular device can control the monitoring of the pressure and the monitoring of the wall thickness of the vessel. The processing system can receive pressure data and wall thickness data and determine a pulse wave velocity of fluid within the vessel.

Abstract: An intraluminal device for delivering laser light and pressure waves includes a flexible elongate member positionable within a body lumen. The member includes an outer sheath; a laser catheter attached within the sheath; a sealed lens assembly located at the sheath's distal end; and a fluid chamber within the sheath, distal of the laser catheter and proximal of the lens assembly. The outer sheath includes a sealed acoustic window radially outward from the fluid chamber. When the chamber is filled with a fluid, a laser beam emitted by the laser catheter causes the photoreactive fluid to generate a pressure wave. When the chamber is filled with the fluid, a second laser beam emitted by the laser catheter exits via the transparent fluid and the sealed lens assembly. The sealed acoustic window and sealed lens assembly prevent the fluid from entering the body lumen.

Abstract: There is provided a method of assessing the reliability of a measurement of blood pressure of a subject, the method in a control unit of an apparatus comprising obtaining a first measurement of at least one physiological characteristic of the subject that is indicative of the level of pain and/or stress of the subject, wherein the first measurement is made prior to a measurement of blood pressure being made; obtaining the measurement of blood pressure of the subject; obtaining a second measurement of the at least one physiological characteristic of the subject, wherein the second measurement is made after the measurement of blood pressure is made and prior to a subsequent measurement of blood pressure being made; and determining if the measurement of blood pressure is reliable based on the first measurement and the second measurement, wherein the measurement of blood pressure is determined to be reliable if the first measurement and the second measurement indicate a low level of pain and/or stress. A corresponding apparatus that implements the method is also provided.

Abstract: Presented is a system and method for assessing the functional ability of a person to perform a task. The system comprises: a task identification unit adapted to identify the task to be performed by the person; and a task complexity unit adapted to obtain a task-specific complexity signal representative of a required level of functional ability to perform the identified task. A functional ability unit is adapted to obtain a functional ability signal representative of a determined functional ability of the person. An assessment unit is adapted to determine an ability of the person to perform the identified task based on the task-specific complexity signal and the functional ability signal.
