The present invention relates to a desk-top type color electro-photographic apparatus which is easy in use, small in size and light in weight, wherein maintenance such as changing its photosensitive member can be performed by a user and color adjustment is performed with high accuracy of less than 100 .mu.m. Developing units for four colors are placed in a rank, a single endless-belt-shaped photosensitive member being placed below them to form an approximately oval shape, the photosensitive member being touched with a transfer member on its major axis side to transfer each color of images. In addition to this, the photosensitive member is employed a cartridge type for easiness of user's maintenance and constructed such that highly accurate positioning between the body of apparatus and the cartridge can be performed. Effect of the eccentricity of pulleys is decreased by means of making the pulleys wrapped with the photosensitive member have the identical diameter and making the diameter of the transfer member integer times as large as that of the pulley.

An exposure process and a development process for a color image information are carried out repeatedly corresponding to a respective hue of the image information. The toner images of n colors are transferred to the drum by contacting a recording paper to the drum. A record mode is selected in accordance with a length in a peripheral direction of the drum of the image information against a peripheral length of the drum. When the length of the image information is longer than the peripheral length of the drum, N times transfer processes are selected as the record mode. The color image is recorded on a full length of the paper. A color printer has means for setting toner image forming areas in the paper sheet convey direction in respect of respective colors, means for detecting a reference position on a photosensitive belt, and image formation start position setting means responsive to the reference position to set a toner image (electrostatic latent image) formation start position in the rotation direction of the photosensitive belt. When the paper sheet length is longer than the outer peripheral length of an intermediate transfer member, the image formation start position setting means sets, for colors other than the final color, a printing area which is shorter than the outer peripheral length of the intermediate transfer member and sets, for the final color, a printing area which begins immediately after a seam position of the photosensitive belt and conforms to the paper sheet length. Through the above setting, when toner images of two colors are superposed to print a color image, the printing area of the final color can be set to a desired range in the paper sheet length direction regardless of the outer peripheral length of the intermediate transfer member, thereby improving the printing speed and preventing degradation of quality.
