Apparatus for processing an end face of an optical fiber connector includes a rotatable index shaft mounted on a frame. A plurality of rotatable chucks are mounted on the index shaft so as to hold optical fiber connectors, respectively. In accordance with the rotation of the index shaft, the chucks can be moved sequentially from one index position to another so as to grind and finish the optical fiber connector. A rotatable drive gear is disposed coaxially with the index shaft. A driven gear is fixedly mounted on each chuck. A pair of first and second intermediate gears are connected to the drive and driven gears, respectively. A clutch is interposed between the pair of intermediate gears and normally connecting them together to transmit the rotation of the drive gear to the driven gear to rotate each chuck. A clutch disengagement device is provided for disengaging the clutch to disconnect the two intermediate gears when each chuck is indexed to a position where the optical fiber connector is attached to and detached from the chuck.

The polishing element and the reference member are arranged at the first and second fixed positions of the swing arm, respectively. After, at the second fixed position, the end portion of the optical fiber connector is positioned with the reference member, the swing arm are moved to the first fixed position to polish the end portion of the optical fiber with the polishing element.

A polishing apparatus (100) for polishing end faces of ferrules to a convex spherical shape comprises a polishing plate (4), a polishing apparatus main unit (2) capable of freely moving the polishing plate (4) in the XY plane while rotating it, a cylinder block mechanism (3) with a plurality of pressure-applying mechanisms (13) arranged in a ring, and a height adjustment mechanism (5) of the cylinder block mechanism, the pressure-applying mechanism (13), having a piston shaft (16) which is pushed outward in a direction perpendicular to the polishing plate (4) by an air cylinder (17), the ferrule (10) being mounted to the end part of the pressure-applying mechanism (13) via a ferrule holding plate (20). Each of the ferrules (10) has imparted to it an appropriate pressure by an air cylinder (17) thereby pressing it up against the polishing plate (4), so that the proper polishing is achieved even if the overall lengths of the ferrules (10) are different. By selecting the polishing grit material used, it is possible to simplify the polishing process.
