When producing a graft modified polyolefin by melting and kneading a polyolefin, a radical-polymerizable monomer and a radical-polymerization initiator, the producing efficiency is improved. The grafting reaction is effected by feeding the melted polyolefin containing either one of said radical-polymerizable monomer and the radical-polymerization initiator to the other. When said radical-polymerizable monomer is an unsaturated carboxylic anhydride, said unsaturated carboxylic anhydride as a starting material is preliminarily heated at 50.degree. to 250.degree. C., and then fed to the grafting reaction mentioned above. When the monomer is an unsaturated carboxylic acid or an acid anhydride of such an unsaturated carboxylic acid, an organic peroxide of a formula (I) is used as the radical-polymerization initiator. ##STR1## In this formula (I), two substituting groups connected directly to the benzene ring have an ortho-positional relationship or a meta-positional relationship, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6, which are the same as or different from one another, each denote a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having the number of carbons of 1 to 10.

An improved polyarylate resin is provided, which resin comprises the following units (I) to (IV) ##STR1## the units (I) being contained in an amount of from 3 to 30 mole %, the units (II) being contained in amount of not less than 30 mole %, the units (III) being contained in an amount of not less than 30 mole %, and the units (IV) being contained in an amount of not larger than 25 mole %, each based on the total moles of the units (I) to (IV). The polyarylate resin has good mechanical strength, heat resistance, resistance to color change, transparency, moldability and flame retardancy. A resin composition comprising the polyarylate resin, a polyamide and an epoxy resin is also provided.

The improved resin composition comprises:(A) a melt-workable liquid-crystal polyester resin obtained by polymerizing components selected from the group consisting of a dicarboxylic acid represented by the general formula (a) HOOC--R.sub.1 --COOH, a diol represented by the general formula (b) HO--R.sup.2 --OH, and an oxycarboxylic acid represented by the general formula (c) HO--R.sup.3 --COOH;(B) a polycarbonate resin having a recurring unit represented by the general formula: ##STR1## (C) a polyolefin and/or an olefinic copolymer, and the polyolefin and/or olefinic copolymer (C) is contained in an amount of 1-15 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of a resin consisting of 95-5 wt % of the liquid-crystal polyester resin (A) and 5-95 wt % of the polycarbonate resin(B). This resin composition is balanced between various physical properties including moldability, heat resistance, impact resistance, dimensional stability and stiffness.

An aromatic polyester consisting of 40-70 mol % of unit I derived from p-hydroxybenzoic acid, 1-8 mol % of unit II derived from m-hydroxybenzoic acid or isophthalic acid, 6-36 mol % of units III and IV derived from terephthalic acid and 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid, respectively, and 10-40 mol % of unit V derived from a symmetrical dihydroxy compound can be melt molded at a temperature of up to 330.degree. C. into an article having improved mechanical and thermal properties. An aromatic polyesteramide consisting of components I to V and unit VI having an anilino group is also provided. A filled composition is obtained by blending the polyester or polyesteramide with an inorganic filler. A magnetic resin composition is obtained by blending the polyester or polyesteramide with a magnetic powder.

A glass fiber reinforced polymer which excels in mechanical properties and is suitable for use in a large-sized structural members, formed from a dispersion liquid by dispersing reinforcement glass fibers and particulate thermoplastic resin in a surfactant-containing aqueous medium in which bubbles of air are dispersed, forming a sheet-like web on a porous support plate, and applying heat and pressure to form a sheet. The reinforcement glass fibers include a silane coupling agent while the matrix resin has functional groups bonded to the silane coupling agent. The concentration of said functional groups is higher in the regions adjacent the surfaces of said reinforcement glass fibers than in regions farther removed therefrom, and said concentration progressively decreases in the direction away from said reinforcement glass fibers.
