The gas discharge panel described here is an AC plasma display panel with electrodes arranged on a substrate, and the electrodes and substrate are coated with a dielectric layer for insulation from the gas filled discharge space, with an improvement in the dielectric layer surface. The improvement being an overcoat layer of at least two alkaline earth compounds, especially CaO and SrO, provided on the dielectric layer surface of this display panel. This overcoat layer significantly lowers the operating voltages of the panel.

An improved method and apparatus to shift discharge spots produced in a gas discharge display panel, in accordance with given input information so that said discharge spots may be display-held in a desired display position. The shift operation is performed by supplying shift voltages sequentially to shift electrodes. A feature of this invention is to oscillate the discharge spots while they are being display-held in a display position, by supplying an operating voltage alternately to adjacent two shift electrodes during a display period. By oscillating the discharge spots during the display period, an operation margin is obtained which is equivalent to the operation margin available during the shift period, and operation of said display panel can be stabilized to avoid misfiring.

In conjunction with an AC plasma display panel a light detecting pen is employed to designate coordinate points on the panel. Circuitry is employed to scan the electrodes of the panel with sustain voltage pulses at predetermined intervals and determine the coincidence of a selectively applied sustain voltage pulse with light detected by the light pen to indicate the location of the light pen with respect to the panel. A negative scanning method is also disclosed wherein coincidence between a sustain voltage pulse which is selectively not applied and the non-detection of light indicates the location.

A gas discharge panel includes several pairs of column (X) electrodes arranged on a first substrate and several pairs of row (Y) electrodes arranged on a second substrate, the column and row electrodes being orthogonally oriented and in spaced, opposed relation to define therebetween a gap filled with an ionizable gas. In a first driving configuration, a corresponding electrode of each pair of (X) electrodes is selectively driven by an (X) address driver and similarly a corresponding one of each of the (Y) electrode pairs is selectively driven by a (Y) address driver. The other electrode of each of the (X) and (Y) electrode pairs then is connected in common to respective (X) and (Y) sustain voltage driver terminals. In a further embodiment, each of the (X) and (Y) electrode pairs is arranged in corresponding groups of electrode pairs, each group including a common number of such pairs. First electrodes of each pair of each group are connected to a common output terminal of an address and sustain voltage driver; thus, plural address and sustain voltage driver outputs corresponding to the plural groups are employed for each of the (X) and (Y) electrode pairs. The second electrodes of corresponding pairs of the plural groups are connected to respectively corresponding, further common output terminals of address and sustain voltage drivers; thus, a plurality of further common terminals corresponding to the number of electrode pairs in each group are provided, as to each of the (X) and (Y) electrodes. The panel as thus configured affords decoding of addressing signals applied to the common terminals by means of plasma coupling within the panel whereby the discharge point or cell defined by a desired electrode of each of the column and the row electrode pairs can be addressed selectively. A further embodiment provides shifting of the display to successive positions in either the (X) or (Y) directions.

An AC plasma display panel with a coated thin film dielectric layer on the electrodes has a structure which includes double layers of chromium (Cr) and copper (Cu). After three metal layers of chromium, copper, and chromium are formed on a glass substrate, these three metal layers are subjected to patterning with the desired electrode pattern in such a fashion as to eliminate the upper chromium layer. Then, a thin dielectric film of alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) is evaporated onto the two remaining metal layers forming the electrodes. This combination of two layer metal electrodes and dielectric layer is very useful in providing a self-shifting plasma display panel having high quality and reliability.

A self shift type gas discharge panel in which pluralities of buses are respectively provided on a pair of substrates disposed opposite each other, electrodes are respectively connected to the buses and shift channels are set up in row and column directions with arrays of discharge points formed between the opposed electrodes of the substrates to enable shifting of a discharge spot in the row or column direction. On the substrates, the electrodes and the buses are so arranged as not to intersect each other, which allows ease in the manufacture of the discharge panel and ensures stable shifting of the discharge spot.
