摘要: A spark plug electrode material that may be used in spark plugs and other ignition devices including industrial plugs, aviation igniters, glow plugs, or any other device that is used to ignite an air/fuel mixture in an engine. According to an exemplary embodiment, the electrode material includes a refractory metal (for example, tungsten (W), molybdenum (Mo), rhenium (Re), ruthenium (Ru) and/or chromium (Cr)) and a precious metal (for example, rhodium (Rh), platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and/or iridium (Ir)), where the refractory metal is present in an amount that is greater than that of the precious metal. This includes, but is certainly not limited to, electrode materials including tungsten-based alloys such as W—Rh and ruthenium-based alloys such as Ru—Rh. Other combinations and embodiments are also possible.

摘要: A spark plug includes at least one electrode having a sparking end. The sparking end is formed of a high temperature performance alloy including chromium in an amount of 10.0 weight percent to 60.0 weight percent, palladium in an amount of 0.5 weight percent to 10.0 weight percent, and a balance substantially of at least one of molybdenum and tungsten. The sparking end presents a spark contact surface, and at a temperature of at least 500° C., such as during use of the spark plug in an internal combustion engine, a layer of chromium oxide (Cr2O3) forms at said spark contact surface. The layer of Cr2O3 protects the bulk of the sparking end from the extreme conditions of the combustion chamber and prevents erosion, corrosion, and balling.

摘要: An igniter (20) of a corona ignition system emits a non-thermal plasma in the form of a corona (30) to ionize and ignite a fuel mixture. The igniter (20) includes an electrode (32) and a ceramic insulator (22) surrounding the electrode (32). The insulator (22) surrounds a firing end (38) of the electrode (32) and blocks the electrode (32) from exposure to the combustion chamber (28). The insulator (22) presents a firing surface (56) exposed to the combustion chamber (28) and emitting the non-thermal plasma. A plurality of electrically conducting elements (24) are disposed in a matrix (26) of the ceramic material and along the firing surface (56) of the insulator (22), such as metal particles embedded in the ceramic material or holes in the ceramic material. The electrically conducting elements (24) reduce arc discharge during operation of the igniter (20) and thus improve the quality of ignition.

摘要: An ignition and diagnostic system (10) for an internal combustion engine includes a sparking device (12) through which a low voltage diagnostic device (54) monitors a sensing feature, for example spark gap (30) conditions, during spark intervals and returns diagnostic feedback to an engine control module (56). A coil (44) is electrically operatively connected to the sparking device (12) through a lead wire (48). The lead wire (48) can be removed and reinstalled with respect to the sparking device (12) via a flexor joint (60) for installation and maintenance. The flexor joint (60) enables positive electrical contact during operation so that low voltage signals from the diagnostic device (54) are maintained even during severe vibration conditions. The flexor joint (60) includes in one embodiment a compression spring (62) which is fully compressed or over-compressed. In another embodiment, the flexor joint (60) comprises a tubular sleeve (64, 64′) having cantilevered upper tangs (70, 70′) which resiliently engage the lead wire (48), and lower tangs (76) which similarly engage the center wire (32) of the sparking device (12) in a resilient manner.
